Abandoning Their Beloved Land
Alberto García's highly informative study examines the Mexican government's decision-making processes behind sending braceros to the United States during the lifetime of the Bracero Program, a guestworker agreement between the two nations that existed from 1942 to 1964. Unlike most studies of braceros, which primarily examine workers’ experiences in the United States, Garcia explores the political factors that went into the bracero selection proc…
The 1970s and the Making of the Modern U.S.-Mexico Border
Vigilante Violence, the Rise of the New Right, and the Persistence of the Texas Farmworkers, 1975–1980
This study charts the ineffective vigilante violence perpetrated by growers in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas to suppress farmworker activism from the mid-to-late 1970s and their abrupt shift in tactics with a 1980 strike in Hereford, Texas, toward the adoption of strictly nonviolent and tediously legalistic new methods associated with the neoconservative backlash. It does so in two major sections. In the first, grower violence is chronicled in d…

The Voice of the Farmworker
This essay examines the first years of a radio show called La Voz del Campesino, which farmworker organizer Antonio Orendain broadcasted from Harlingen, in Texas’s Lower Rio Grande Valley. The author argues that Orendain’s show drew an overwhelmingly positive response from listeners across the nearby border in Mexico, sparked a positive movement for social change on the Texas side of the border, and, finally, popularized the ideals of the Chicano…
Labor's Outcasts
The historiography of farm labor in North America has undergone a renaissance of sorts in recent decades. Books such as Christian O. Paiz's The Strikers of Coachella and Mireya Loza's Defiant Braceros have reexamined the United Farm Workers (UFW) and the era of the Bracero Program (1942–64) respectively, reorienting the historiography toward a truly “bottom-up” perspective, which previous studies often lacked. Still, most studies in the history o…

The Touch of Civilization
Steven Sabol’s The Touch of Civilization is a welcome addition to the small but growing number of histories of colonialism in the North American West, perhaps most notably areas that existed as so-called “internal colonies” inside of U.S. borders. Sabol compares internal colonization’s effects on the Sioux and the Kazakhs of the Russian Steppe in order to explain “how and why two nineteenth-century expanding powers colonized two different peoples…
Standing on Common Ground
The Governor's Hounds
Edmund J. Davis famously hoped to “leave Texas at the end of my term of office a quiet and peaceable and law respecting state” (p. 51). Davis, a radical Republican who was governor of Texas from 1870 to 1874, created the Texas State Police in 1870 in hopes of curbing the widespread violence in the former Confederate state. As this book by Donaly E. Brice and the late Barry A. Crouch shows, the hated state police worked hard to achieve Davis's ant…
