  • Armed resistance to Roman rule in North Africa, from the time of Augustus to the vandal invasion

    David Cherry•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2020•References: 9

It is difficult now to determine how much resistance there was to Roman rule in North Africa because of the almost complete absence of evidence for the sentiments of the region’s non-Roman population. A small number of so-called ‘Libyan’ inscriptions survive on stone, but the texts, where they can be deciphered, reveal little. Armed resistance to Roman rule seems to have been sporadic and mostly small-scale, at least in the period before about 25…

  • Acculturation

  • Fossa Regia

    Open Access•David Cherry•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

A long, broad trench, excavated on the orders of Scipio Aemilianus at the end of the Third Punic war in 146 BCE , the Fossa Regia was intended to delimit the western boundary of the newly created Roman province of Africa.

  • Cillium (Kasserine)

    Open Access•David Cherry•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Cillium was located in a comparatively fertile part of the Tunisian upland steppe, approximately 150 miles south‐southwest of Carthage, at a strategically important pass in the Aurès mountains, between Djebel Chambi, Tunisia's highest mountain (5066 ft), and Djebel Semmama. In antiquity, the pass allowed seasonal movement between the semi‐arid, mostly pastoralist region south of Cillium and the rich grain‐producing areas to its north. The region …

Lawrence Okamura, David Cherry•ARTICLE•The Journal of Military History•1999

This book seeks to define the cultural, social, and economic consequences of the Roman occupation of North Africa (c.50 BC-AD 250), mainly in the semi-arid frontier-zone of what is today Algeria. It also offers a fresh look at the development and purpose of the north African frontier-system. Through detailed examination of the region's archaeological and epigraphic record, including the marriage-patterns recorded on its surviving, funerary inscri…

  • The Minician Law

    David Cherry•ARTICLE•Phoenix•1990

THE HISTORY OF THE LAW governing the marriage of Roman citizens and non-Romans is readily reconstructed, not much affected by the Justinianic reworking and redaction of many legal texts and the loss of much juristic writing. It betrays the complexity of the Roman law of marriage. At its heart was the Minician law, the terms of which are explicitly attested, though not much canvassed.1 Enacted probably sometime before the Social War, the law seems…
