Cillium was located in a comparatively fertile part of the Tunisian upland steppe, approximately 150 miles south‐southwest of Carthage, at a strategically important pass in the Aurès mountains, between Djebel Chambi, Tunisia's highest mountain (5066 ft), and Djebel Semmama. In antiquity, the pass allowed seasonal movement between the semi‐arid, mostly pastoralist region south of Cillium and the rich grain‐producing areas to its north. The region was home to several semi‐nomadic tribes, notably the Musulamii and the Fraxii.
