    Open Access•Sara Black, Ashley Visagie•ARTICLE•Globalisation Societies and…•2025•References: 9

This article reflects on our participation in two efforts at education organising at the advent of the COVID-19 pandemicthe national C19 People's Coalition, and the Progressive Organisations Formation (POF).We suggest our experiences as participants in these movements reflect a broader political climate in South Africa in which large-scale, organised resistance is absent in the 'post-1994' basic education context.Using Gramsci's concept of 'inter…

  • Lifelong learning as cruel optimism

    Open Access•Sara Black•ARTICLE•International Review of Education•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 17

This article seeks to examine how two discourses -of lifelong learning and techno-solutionism - tangle with each other in South African education policy imaginaries, particularly the latter discourse as a response to an (arguably manufactured) frame of "crisis". The author suggests that the discourse of lifelong learning constructs a relation of what Lauren Berlant terms "cruel optimism" for the marginalised majority of South Africans, sustaining…

  • Rehumanizing the graduate seminar by embracing ambiguity

    J Rice, Jennifer L Rice et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 5

This Viewpoint introduces the Athena Co-Learning Collective: A group of faculty and graduate students at the University of Georgia committed to teaching and learning differently in the academy. In particular, we describe the Athena Co-Learning Collective’s efforts to reject masculine forms of teaching and learning that are characteristic of the traditional seminar. Instead, we focus on rehumanization, as offered by Katherine McKittrick, to render…

  • Morphine on Trial

Sara Black, Sara Elizabeth Black•ARTICLE•French Historical Studies•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 20

This article examines medical-legal debates over the criminal responsibility of morphine addicts in the fin de siècle, at a time when the use of psychotropic drugs was not yet illegal. Addicted defendants argued that morphine had produced a temporary state of insanity at the time of the crime. However, medical-legal experts emphasized the regulatory influence of morphine over the addicted body, navigating between moralistic arguments about the pr…
