  • Wars for Empire

    Open Access•Michael Pierce•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2018

Janne Lahti, who teaches history at the University of Helsinki, writes in the introduction that it is “the strands and shapes of violence comprising this splintered and intricate encounter between the United States and the Apaches that this book sets (out) to chart” (p. 6). He argues that the Apache wars were only a part of the United States’ ongoing drive for a continental empire and just one act in the growth of worldwide colonialism. Part I, “…

Permanent exhibition, opened Nov. 2004. 20,000 sq. ft. Ralph Applebaum Associates, design. After defeating George H. W. Bush in 1992, Bill Clinton did not dismantle his campaign apparatus. He simply moved it into the White House, creating what commentators called the “permanent campaign.” Relying on pollsters, political consultants, and public relations experts, the Clinton White House carefully crafted its message to sell policy positions to vot…

From 1860 to 1890 the United States military engaged in war after war with the indigenous peoples of the West. Although numerous treaties recognized the rights of individual tribes, the U.S. government often did nothing to stop settlers from expanding into Indian territory. Some Indians fled, and others attempted to coexist with the newcomers, but many fought against the loss of homelands and traditional ways of life. Superior numbers, organizati…
