This paper reports a test of a joint problem-solving model in a large telecommunications firm, as part of an overall assessment of the firm's quality-of-worklife (QWL) and employee involvement (El) committees. Treating Factor Interpretations as Hypotheses
Factor analysis is used extensively in the construction of psychometric scales. It may appear to be a mathematically precise and objective technique, but it involves many subjective choices and its results require subjective interpretation. Factor interpretations are hypotheses that should be tested, yet often are accepted simply on the basis of post hoc expert judgment. Untested judgments about the meaning of factors sometimes result in mislabel…
Consideration and Initiating Structure: Are They Basic Dimensions of Leader Behavior
Although consideration and initiating structure are widely accepted as basic dimensions of leader behavior and scales measuring these dimensions have been employed in research for almost thirty years, the validity of the scales and the interpretation of the factors on which they are based were never fully tested. Two recent studies indicate that the factors are multi-dimensional and probably do not represent fundamental dimensions of leader behav…
Measurement of Role Stress: Dimensionality of Scale Items
In the short scales developed by Rizzo et al. (1970) role conflict and role ambiguity are confounded with negative and positive item wording. In an attempt to unconfound the scales, responses from 220 subjects were obtained to the original set of 30 items. Sets of positive- and negative-worded items were factored separately. It was found that subjects responded somewhat to the conflict and ambiguity dimensions, but also to subscales within each d…
