  • Imperial Art: Duality on Tanwetamani’s Dream Stela

    Open Access•Christopher Cox•ARTICLE•Arts•2024

In the 7th century BCE, the Kushite king Tanwetamani commissioned his “Dream Stela”, which was to be erected in the Amun Temple of Jebel Barkal. The lunette of the stela features a dualistic artistic motif whose composition, meaning, and significance are understudied despite their potential to illuminate important aspects of royal Kushite ideology. On the lunette, there are two back-to-back offering scenes that appear at first glance to be nearly…

  • A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis of the development of turn taking in adult–child vocal interactions

Open Access•Vivian Nguyen, Otto Versyp et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2022

Fluent conversation requires temporal organization between conversational exchanges. By performing a systematic review and Bayesian multi-level meta-analysis, we map the trajectory of infants’ turn-taking abilities over the course of early development (0 to 70 months). We synthesize the evidence from 26 studies (78 estimates from 429 unique infants, of which at least 152 are female) reporting response latencies in infant–adult dyadic interactions…

  • Quantifying Sources of Variability in Infancy Research Using the Infant-Directed-Speech Preference

Open Access•Michael C Frank, Katie Alcock et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Methods and Practices…•2020

Psychological scientists have become increasingly concerned with issues related to methodology and replicability, and infancy researchers in particular face specific challenges related to replicability: For example, high-powered studies are difficult to conduct, testing conditions vary across labs, and different labs have access to different infant populations. Addressing these concerns, we report on a large-scale, multisite study aimed at (a) as…

Mithun 1999), the field has benefited from a wider availability of data through published grammars, dictionaries, and articles, as well the greater ease of accessibility to digital archives containing field notes and other relevant primary materials. Additionally, computer-aided techniques of data analysis have been developed, maki…

  • There's no “I” in team: Effects of cooperative video games on cooperative behavior

Open Access•T Greitemeyer, Cameron Cox et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 22

The present research tests the idea that playing a team‐player video game in which players work together as teammates and assist each other in achieving a common goal increases cooperative behavior toward a new partner. In fact, relative to a single‐player mode, cooperatively playing a video game increased cooperation in a mixed‐motive decision dilemma task. Because the players were exposed to the same video game content in both experimental cond…

  • Mennonite Plautdietsch (Canadian Old Colony)

Open Access•Cameron Cox, Christopher Cox et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Mennonite Plautdietsch (ISO 639-3: pdt) is a West Germanic (Indo-European) language belonging to the Low Prussian (Niederpreußisch) subgroup of Eastern Low German (Ostniederdeutsch), a continuum of closely related varieties spoken in northern Poland until the Second World War (Ziesemer 1924, Mitzka 1930, Thiessen 1963). Although its genetic affiliation with these other, now-moribund Polish varieties is uncontested, Mennonite Plautdietsch represen…

  • Specific Sex Drug Combinations Contribute to the Majority of Recent HIV Seroconversions Among MSM in the Macs

David G Ostrow, Michael W Plankey et al.•ARTICLE•JAIDS Journal of Acquired Immune…•2009

BACKGROUND: New HIV infections are being observed among men who have sex with men (MSM). Understanding the fusion of risky sexual behaviors, stimulant and erectile dysfunction drug use with HIV seroconversion may provide direction for focused intervention. METHODS: During the follow-up period (1998-2008), we identified 57 HIV seroconverters among 1667 initially HIV-seronegative men. Time to seroconversion was modeled using Cox proportional hazard…

  • The Relationship Between Methamphetamine and Popper Use and Risk of HIV Seroconversion in the Multicenter Aids Cohort Study

Michael W Plankey, Michael Plankey et al.•ARTICLE•JAIDS Journal of Acquired Immune…•2007

BACKGROUND: The association between methamphetamine use and HIV seroconversion for men who have sex with men (MSM) was examined using longitudinal data from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study. METHODS: Seronegative (n = 4003) men enrolled in 1984 to 1985, 1987 to 1991, and 2001 to 2003 were identified. Recent methamphetamine and popper use was determined at the current or previous visit. Time to HIV seroconversion was the outcome of interest. Cova…

Gitanjali Saluja, Ruth A Brenner et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Objective. We examined circumstances surrounding swimming pool drownings among US residents aged 5 to 24 years to understand why Black males and other racial/ethnic groups have high drowning rates. Methods. We obtained data about drowning deaths in the United States (1995–1998) from death certificates, medical examiner reports, and newspaper clippings collected by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Results. During the study period, 678 US…

  • Intellectual Impairment in Children with Blood Lead Concentrations below 10 μg per Deciliter

Richard L Canfield, Charles Henderson et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•2003

BACKGROUND: Despite dramatic declines in children's blood lead concentrations and a lowering of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's level of concern to 10 microg per deciliter (0.483 micromol per liter), little is known about children's neurobehavioral functioning at lead concentrations below this level. METHODS: We measured blood lead concentrations in 172 children at 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months of age and administered the …

  • After the Drinking Stops: Completed Suicide in Individuals with Remitted Alcohol Use Disorders

Kenneth R Conner, Paul R Duberstein et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2000

A substantial minority of suicide victims have remitted alcohol use disorders. The authors hypothesized that psychiatric disorders are likely to be present in this group to create the necessary conditions for suicide. They compared suicide victims with active alcohol use disorders and those with remitted alcohol use disorders. Using data on a community sample of suicide victims (N=141), it was determined that 39% (N=55) had a history of alcohol m…

  • Personality traits and suicidal behavior and ideation in depressedinpatients 50 years of age and older

Paul R Duberstein, Yeates Conwell et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2000•Cited by: 4

Completed suicide may be the most preventable lethal complication of depressive disorders in older adults. Identification of risk factors for suicidal behavior has therefore become a major public health priority. Using data collected on 81 depressed patients 50 years of age and older, we report analyses designed to determine the associations between the personality traits that constitute the Five Factor Model of personality and measures of suicid…

Two experiments on direct evaluation procedures are described below. The first involved students' judgments of how well they understood well defined terms and concepts presented in a course. The judgments were made anonymously to avoid instructor deprecation of poor performances and specific pressures for grade achievement. It was considered that such responses should reflect permanent aspects of instruction better than responses to less well def…
