Parental perceptions of English literacy readiness among Korean immigrant families with pre-K children
Navigating Bilingual Worlds
This study examines the critical role of early language experiences in shaping the language learning journey of bilingual individuals. It highlights the significant influence of family language policies and perspectives on language learning and bilingualism, particularly the profound impact of the family and bilingual community members. By interviewing four first‐grade bilingual children fluent in both Korean and English, along with their parents…
Mental contrasting prevents a negative future by changing the explicit and implicit meaning of reality.
People often anticipate feared, negative future events but still fail to take preventive action-simply imagining feared outcomes does not reliably prompt behavior change. Research has shown that mental contrasting-imagining a negative future and then reflecting on a positive reality in the present-can translate this fear into action. However, the psychological mechanisms underlying this effect remain unexplored. Across five experiments (two cross…
Impact of Covid-19 on national health screening participation and chronic disease detection
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted preventive healthcare services worldwide, raising concerns about missed diagnoses of chronic diseases. South Korea's national health screening program experienced a substantial decline in participation during 2020. This study investigated how changes in screening rates influenced chronic disease detection and what these shifts reveal about the resilience of the national health system. Methods: Using the…
Influence of comorbidities, geriatric syndromes, and frailty on mortality risk by discharge destination in older adults after acute hospitalization
Background: This study investigated its impact of discharge destination on mortality risk among older adults following acute hospital discharge, focusing on the effects of frailty, geriatric syndromes, and comorbidities. Methods: Nationwide claims data from the South Korean National Health Insurance Service of individuals aged ≥65 years who were discharged from acute care hospitals in 2017 were retrospectively analyzed, with participants followed…

Latina Mothers’ Experiences with Their Young Children’s Inclusive Special Education
Early childhood inclusion is widely recognized as a support system in the U.S., but it may be less familiar to Latine families. This study explored Latina mothers’ experiences with early childhood inclusive special education for their children with disabilities in public schools. Using virtual, semi-structured interviews, five caregivers shared their perspectives. Participants identified both the benefits and concerns of inclusive special educati…
The inclusion-related attitudes and perceptions of early childhood educators in South Korea
Presumed to value diversity
Purpose The current research investigates the link between the presence of diversity and perceived ethicality of an organization. Design/methodology/approach Across two experiments with North American samples, we manipulate racial diversity in an organization. Study 1 tests the effect on perceived ethicality. Study 2 tests a moderated mediation model where diversity intention (i.e. whether diversity is due to internal culture or external complian…
Mental contrasting of a negative future facilitates Covid-19 preventative behaviors
Objective: The present research examined whether mentally contrasting a negative, feared future (i.e., infection with the Coronavirus) with a still positive reality can promote preventative actions in the context of the pandemic. Design: In two randomized controlled trials, we varied participants’ mode of thought (mental contrasting of a negative future with a positive reality versus fantasizing of a negative future). Study 2 took into account th…

Understanding early childhood stakeholders' beliefs and experiences with discipline using virtual learning labs
Young children of colour with disabilities have experienced more exclusionary practices in educational settings. Given the fast-growing number of students of colour across classrooms in the United States, and approximately 1 in 6 students identified with disabilities in public schools, it is important to pay attention to why exclusionary discipline is disproportionately used at school. Understanding views from different stakeholders on exclusiona…
Experiences of Family Collaboration in Early Intervention among Korean and Chinese Caregivers
Despite the importance of family-centered practice in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Part C, a federally funded program for birth to two-year-old children with disabilities, there is a lack of research on Asian families who participate in early intervention in the U.S. This study examined the experiences of two Korean families and one Chinese family in early intervention in the U.S. Interviews were conducted and analyzed by bilin…

Accelerated Cognitive Function Decline in Community-Dwelling Older Adults during Covid-19 Pandemic
This study aimed to analyze the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on cognitive function of community-dwelling elderly individuals. Five-year (2016 to 2020) longitudinal data of the Korea Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS) were used. There were 1559 participants in 2016 and 1455 in 2017 aged 72-84 years. Follow-up was conducted at two-year intervals. We selected participants from the database of the 2017 and 2018 surveys for intergroup compariso…

Botanical formulation, Tadios, alleviates lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-Induced acute lung injury in mice via modulation of the Nrf2-HO-1 signaling pathway
Our data suggest the potential for TADIOS to be developed as a safe and effective therapeutics for the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome
Usefulness of Orientation to the Year as an Aid to Case Finding of Mild Cognitive Impairment or Depression in Community-Dwelling Older Adults
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and depression are common and frequently misdiagnosed in older adults in primary care. In particular, depression combined with cognitive dysfunction is associated with a higher risk of dementia. We tried to find the usefulness of orientation to time as an easy case-finding tool for suspecting MCI or depression. This cross-sectional study included 2668 community-dwelling adults aged 70-84 years from the Korean Frail…
Crossing back over the Rubicon
When the ultimate goal of the group is found to be unattainable via the chosen means (i.e., a subgoal), effective goal management requires group members to disengage from that failing subgoal and reengage with a feasible alternative. The present study investigated the combined role of group members’ value orientation and their self-concept in collective goal revision in task groups. In a laboratory experiment involving 55 three-person groups, we …
Interweaving disentangled
This study explores the intersectionality in the educational experiences of Korean American students with autism as they navigate the transition from high school to college. For these students, dis/ability status alone does not shape the pathway to adulthood: dis/ability is tightly bound with other social categories, such as race, language, and immigration status, impacting everyday experiences of the students, including preparing college applica…
Randomized clinical trial of capnometry-assisted respiratory training in veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder hyperarousal
This intervention did not reduce PTSD hyperarousal symptoms, perhaps due to differences between underlying mechanisms of PTSD hyperarousal and panic disorder or to differences between veteran and civilian populations. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
Korean dance performance influences on prospective tourist cultural products consumption and behaviour intention
We examined to what extent viewing the Korean dance performance by Beyond The Scene (BTS) at the 2018 Melon Music Awards influenced global viewers’ purchase of Korean cultural products and tourism behaviour intention. We surveyed 230 prospective tourists from the USA (black adult females = 50%; mean age = 34.9, SD = 1.116) in terms of their preference for Korean cultural products and intention to visit Korea. We conducted structural equation mode…
Factor Structure and Other Psychometric Properties of the Social Phobia Inventory in Korean Samples
We examined the factor structure and other psychometric properties of the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN) in Korean nonclinical (N1 = 457, N2 = 444) and clinical undergraduate samples (N3 = 12). Results support the revised 3-factor structure and applicability of the SPIN as a measure yielding valid and reliable scores of social anxiety to Koreans
Positioning of Korean Immigrant Mothers of Children with Disabilities
This study examines the ways in which Korean immigrant mothers take up roles to position themselves while they engage in their children's education across a wide range of settings-academic, social, and linguistic. Data sources included interviews with four Korean mothers, home and community observations, and field notes. Positioning theory is a research approach that provides a useful analytic means for understanding positioning of Korean immigra…

Marvin Farber (1901-1980)
November 24, 1980, Marvin Farber passed away at the age of 79 after along and distinguished career at The State University of New York at Buffalo where he founded and directed Philosophy and Phenomenological Research — a high-powered internationl journal that put Buffalo on the philosophical map. His loss, however, will hardly be felt by official American philosophy because corpses have no feelings, and American philosophy has now been intellectu…

Confucian Capitalism
The conclusions of David Gross' The Past in Ruins are far too timid. This may be due to his being too embedded in modernity. According to Gross, each individual would have to decide with regard to traditions whether some truth would be irretrievably lost if they disappeared; or whether traditions would help to advance critical consciousness; or whether traditions improve individual autonomy or strengthen moral awareness. These, however, are acade…
