  • Reconstructing the life histories of a noble couple from the Joseon period, Korea, based on skeletal evidence and historical records

    Open Access•E J Woo, Helen Cho et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 1

This study is an osteobiography of a noble couple who were members of the “ruling elite” in the 18th‐century Joseon period, Korea. The archaeological context and historical records indicate that the couple lived and died during a period marked by strict observance of social hierarchy. The husband's skeleton exhibits clear evidence of craniosynostosis and spinal scoliosis. In particular, congenital craniosynostosis of the skull likely caused defor…

  • Political tolerance of demobilizing armed actors

    Open Access•Kwansik Mun, Hernando Rojas et al.•ARTICLE•Media War & Conflict•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 47

Recent scholarship has shown the importance of political conservatism, perceived (in)security, and communication channels (i.e. mass media) in increased or decreased tolerance toward certain groups. This study advances our knowledge in this area by integrating the importance of media exposure, interpersonal communication and attitudes toward political elites in shaping tolerance levels toward the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Ar…

  • Syphilitic infection in a pre-modern population from South Korea (19th century AD)

    Open Access•E J Woo, Jae-Hyun Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Recent studies suggest that acquired syphilis evolved in the Old World from a non-sexually transmitted treponeme originating in the New World during early European expansion and colonization. However, when and via which route the bacteria were introduced into Asia remains uncertain. This study examined the first paleopathological evidence of syphilitic infection in an individual from the 19th century AD in South Korea. The individuals from a site…

  • Torus mandibularis in skeletal remains from the Joseon Dynasty and modern Korea

Open Access•Helen Cho, Dong Hoon Shin et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2017•References: 1

Torus mandibularis (TM), or mandibular tori, are nodular, excessive bony growths along the lingual side of the lower jaw. TM occurs in varying frequencies in different populations with a higher prevalence in Asiatic and circumpolar groups. The tori are associated with mechanical stress from masticatory and paramasticatory behaviors, heredity, sex, age, and environmental factors. We investigated the presence, location, symmetry, and degree of TM f…

  • Cortical bone remodeling rates in a sample of African American and European American descent groups from the American Midwest

    Open Access•Helen Cho, Sam D Stout et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2006•Cited by: 10•References: 53

This study employs regression analysis to explore population and sex differences in the pattern of age‐associated bone loss, as reflected by histomorphometric variables that are measures of intracortical and endocortical bone remodeling. A comparison of an African American sample from the Washington Park Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, and a European American rib sample composed of cadavers, autopsies, and forensic cases from Missouri reveals th…
