Play signals, play moves: A Gorilla Critique of Play Theory
Play dates over a three-year study of two bachelor western lowland gorillas at the Philadelphia Zoo offer a critique of the idea of play as essentially a voluntary activity. Through video microanalysis, play emerges as negotiated interaction. Play counts: Pedometers and the Case for Recess
This paper seeks to demonstrate the physical benefits of child-directed free play during recess through the use of pedometers. Although play is clearly not reducible to exercise, this study of an urban, middle class, public elementary school found that recess offered, on average, 30% more steps per minute than organized gym periods. For some children in this urban American sample, recess offered twice the amount of movement as the equivalent time…

Recess Battles: Playing, Fighting, and Storytelling
As children wrestle with culture through their games, recess itself has become a battleground for the control of children’s time.
