This paper seeks to demonstrate the physical benefits of child-directed free play during recess through the use of pedometers. Although play is clearly not reducible to exercise, this study of an urban, middle class, public elementary school found that recess offered, on average, 30% more steps per minute than organized gym periods. For some children in this urban American sample, recess offered twice the amount of movement as the equivalent time in gym class. Recess, endangered as it is in the United States, can therefore be an inexpensive anti-obesity program. Linking this quantitative study to a qualitative study of the same children, in one school, the paper raises questions about the intersection between play theory, play practice, and health
