Settlement and Landscape Change in the Hebridean Archipelago: Late Medieval Colonsay
Throughout the medieval period the Inner Hebrides were subject to continual societal change and varying degrees of upheaval. This was a society defined by familial allegiances and bound by the geographies of their local world. Its islands, however, were not peripheral places but were instead situated in a wider seascape, where maritime networks and communication facilitated trade and connectivity. By the 15th century the Hebridean Island of Colon…
Constructing Contemporary Nationhood in the Museums and Heritage Centres of Catalonia
Geographically Spain consists of a complex mosaic of cultural identities and regional aspirations for varying degrees of autonomy and independence. Following the end of violent conflict in the Basque country, Catalonia has emerged as the most vocal region pursuing independence from the central Spanish state. Within the Catalan separatist movement, cultural heritage sites and objects have been appropriated to play an intrinsic role in supporting p…
Maritime Lordship in Late-Medieval Gaelic Ireland
BY THE MIDDLE OF THE 15TH CENTURY a series of lordships had become firmly established along Gaelic Ireland’s western seaboard. These territories were controlled by a number of semi-autonomous kin groups, or ‘septs’. They were not homogenous entities but instead emerged under varying socio-political conditions and negotiated their relationships with society and landscape in multiple ways. Both physical geography and environment played a significan…
Archaeological investigations at Kinbane Castle, County Antrim and its Scottish connections
Kinbane Castle is positioned at the base of steep cliffs on the north Antrim coast, with views northwards to Rathlin Island and Islay and eastwards to Kintyre. Recent investigations have demonstrated that this headland was fortified in the 1540s by certain MacDonalds who had arrived in Antrim from Islay. The site was built to act as a bridgehead into Ulster as this family, and its associated mercenaries, attempted to establish themselves as a maj…
Duns, brochs and crannogs: Medieval use
Survey and excavation at Dunstaffnage Castle, Argyll
Recent investigations at Dunstaffnage, partially funded by Historic Scotland, have provided additional information regarding the castle's constructional history. Excavations have identified features associated with its initial construction in the 13th century and subsequent refurbishment episodes over the following centuries. Additionally, two medieval lime kilns have been located outside of the castle walls associated with these developments. In…

Normative Data From the Standardization of Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices in Kuwait in an International Context
A probability sample ( N =6,594) of Kuwaiti school students aged 8–15 years responded to the Raven Standard Progressive Matrices (Raven, 1958). The test was administered, untimed, in group sessions. In this paper, the smoothed summary age norms for Kuwait (which will themselves be of interest to many psychologists and others working in Kuwait and neighboring countries) are first compared with what have become the standard international reference …

Toward Measures of High-Level Competencies: A Re-examination of McClelland's Distinction Between Needs and Values
McClelland has argued that it is essential to distinguish sharply both between operant and respondent measures and between needs and values. Further, that it is not possible to develop respondent measures of needs. In this paper, it is argued that there are alternative explanations of the results which led McClelland to these conclusions. Thereafter, it is shown that McClelland's measures of needs are best understood as indices of the number of i…

Principle of Individuation and Co‐ordinates of Conduct
Theories can be of two kinds, ‘disciplines of thought’ or ‘speculative hypotheses’. ‘principle of individuation’ provides a discipline of thought capable of embracing mathematical equation, dimensions of physics, biological interaction between individual and environment, and psychosomatic problems encountered in medicine and in so‐called para‐psychology. It indicates not only lines along which divergent schools of psychological thought and inquir…
