African American Mothers of Early Adolescents: Perceptions of Two Generations
This study sought to determine how 271 African American mothers of 10- to 14-year-olds viewed their strengths and limitations as parents and to detect how 292 children from this age group perceived the parent performance of their mothers. Significant generational differences were found in four of six scales and 30 of 60 items on the Parent Success Indicator. The independent variable with the greatest influence on how both generations saw parent s…

The purpose of this study was to determine how African-American fathers of 10- to 14-year-olds viewed their strengths and learning needs as parents and to find out how children in this age group perceived the parent performance of their fathers. Perceived Parenting Success of Mothers in Japan
The purpose of this study was to find out how Japanese mothers of 10- to 14-year-old children saw their strengths and limitations as parents, and to learn how children in this age group perceived the parent performance of their mothers. The Parent Success Indicator was administered to 589 mothers and 646 adolescents. Analyses revealed significant differences between generations on four of six scales. Mothers saw themselves as better teachers and …
Parent Success Indicator: Development and Factorial Validation
Responses from 612 Parent Success Indicators (PSI) by parents and children were subjected to factor analysis. Data were factor analyzed to determine if the underlying factor structure of the instrument fit the hypothesized dimensions suggested by the position of 60 items on six subscales. The principal components extraction analysis produced 13 factors with prerotation eigenvalues greater than 1.0. A principal component solution set at six factor…

Grandparent Education for Black Families
Scholars maintain that grandparents are capable of making a greater contribution to families and many urge the design of curricula to help grandparents achieve their potential (Aldrich & Austin, 1991; Bengston & Robertson, 1985; Cherlin & Furstenberg, 1986). The initial programs, involving mostly Anglo grandparents, have been effective (Strom, Collinsworth, & Strom, 1990); but success with this population does not mean the same focus is appropria…
Parental Differences in Expectations of Gifted Children
This comparative study was conducted to identify similarities and differences in the expectations of families whose capable children have traditionally been under represented in gifted education programs. The Parent as a Teacher Inventory was administered to a sample of 69 rural Hispanic and Anglo parents. Responses served as the basis for shaping a differentiated curriculum to help mothers and fathers support their potentially gifted four to eig…
The Grandparent Strengths and Needs Inventory: Development and Factorial Validation
Responses for 2,012 Grandparent Strengths and Needs Inventories (GSNI) by grandparents, parents, and grandchildren were factor analyzed to determine if the underlying structure of the instrument fit the hypothesized dimensions suggested by the position of 60 items on six subscales. Two extraction methods, principal components and principal factors analyses, produced 10 factors with prerotation eigenvalues greater than 1.0. A principal component s…
