Scholars maintain that grandparents are capable of making a greater contribution to families and many urge the design of curricula to help grandparents achieve their potential (Aldrich & Austin, 1991; Bengston & Robertson, 1985; Cherlin & Furstenberg, 1986). The initial programs, involving mostly Anglo grandparents, have been effective (Strom, Collinsworth, & Strom, 1990); but success with this population does not mean the same focus is appropriate for Black families (Graham, 1992). The present article reports on a comparative study of the self-perceived and grandchild-perceived strengths and educational needs of Black and Anglo grandparents. The purpose of this study was to determine how to adapt programs deemed effective for Anglos such that they would be suitable for Black grandparents.
