Receptive dual-language profiles in Spanish–English bilingual preschoolers
Does left populism short-circuit itself? Podemos in the labyrinths of cultural elitism and radical leftism
Podemos’ initial left populist strategy and electoral success have been the subject of much academic debate. However, amid the party’s rapidly declining numbers at the polls, scholarly attention towards the Spanish party has been on the wane. Based on a discussion of the existing literature and a mixture of qualitative methods, this paper attempts to capture the distinctive features of the early populist gamble and two internal elements that prog…
Self-regulation development among young Spanish-English dual language learners
‘Legado’, ‘fracaso’ o ‘farsa’
The quality of mother-toddler communication predicts language and early literacy in Mexican American children from low-income households
Moving Forward by Looking Back
This study investigated early indicators of Spanish-speaking English learners (ELs) at risk for reading difficulties at the end of Grade 2 by examining their early bilingual oral language development, taking into account language of academic instruction. Standardized measures of reading and narrative samples were collected in English and Spanish from kindergarten to Grade 2 from 1,243 ELs primarily instructed in English or Spanish. Conditional gr…
Speaking and Reading in Two Languages
Articles in this issue examine (1) the primary sources of variability in reading and language achievement among Spanish-speaking English learners (ELs) in the United States, (2) the extent to which poor performance at the end of grade 2 is identifiable in developmental trajectories beginning in kindergarten, (3) the relations among core reading constructs of phonological awareness and decoding in both English and Spanish and the factors that affe…
IQ‐Achievement Discrepancy for Identification of Disabilities in Spanish‐speaking English Learners
This article examines the validity of IQ-achievement discrepancy and low achievement as criteria for the identification of disabilities in Spanish-speaking English-language learners (ELs) and the factors that moderate the validity of these approaches as bases for identification. While there has been a long history of examining the validity of different approaches to disability identification in monolinguals, there are no systematic approaches tak…
Culture, parenting, and language
The cultural value of respeto (respect) is central to Latine parenting. Yet, how respeto manifests in the interactions of Latine parents and their young children remains unexamined. Low-income Mexican immigrant Spanish-speaking mothers and their 2.5-year-old toddlers ( N = 128) were video-recorded during play ( M age = 30.2 months, SD = 0.52), and two culturally informed items of respeto were coded: parent calm authority and child affiliative obe…
A systematic method for the analytical evaluation of convolution integrals
Analytic methods are presented for the systematic evaluation of convolution integrals that contain piecewise-continuous or piecewise-smooth functions. These methods involve breaking the convolution integral into a sum of integrals and expressing each integral in a standard form that can be easily evaluated. Mathematical insight is gained by looking at the result as a superposition of terms, where each term is nonzero or active during a specific t…
