  • Against Algorithmic Clarity

Open Access•Joseph Erickson, Michael Gregory•ARTICLE•International Journal for the…•2025

As algorithmic tools increasingly assist in legal decision-making, they impose structural demands that often conflict with the normative character of law. Legal concepts must be translated into computational form to function within algorithmic systems, and such translation requires increased conceptual specificity. This paper argues that the specificity demanded by these systems undermines a core virtue of legal reasoning: its principled vaguenes…

  • Kant’s Hylomorphic Formulation of Right and the Necessity of the State

    Open Access•Michael Gregory, Mike Gregory•ARTICLE•Kant-Studien•2023

This paper argues against the common justification for the necessity of the state through the particular difficulty of private property right. Instead, I argue that the necessity of the state is internal to the concept of right in general. In order to show this, I point out how Kants adoption of hylomorphic language for the concept of right, where there is a formal and material aspect of right, allows us to understand the Rechtslehre as progressi…

The NHS and Social Care in England are facing one of the biggest financial challenges for a generation. Commissioners and providers need to work on collaborative schemes to manage the increasing demand on health and social care within a period of financial constraint. Different forms of care co-ordination have been developed at different levels across the world. In the north-west of England, the Trafford health and social care economy have been w…

  • What is new in the new industrial policy? A manufacturing systems perspective

Erin O’sullivan, Antonio Andreoni et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Review of Economic Policy•2013

This paper explores the recent evolution of manufacturing-related policies in leading OECD economies—Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. A novel framework, the industrial policy matrix, is introduced and then used to illustrate and compare policy approaches in terms of factor inputs, intervention levels, and degrees of coordination. While approaches adopted in different countries vary, reflecting their respective contexts, …

  • Aspects of varieties differentiation

    Open Access•Michael Gregory•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•1967•Cited by: 43•References: 5

There has been much discussion of intra-lingual varieties in recent years. Catford has pertinently stated the problem which has prompted this discussion and justified the need to solve it (1965:83): ‘The concept of a “whole language” is so vast and heterogeneous that it is not operationally useful for many linguistic purposes, descriptive, comparative and pedagogical. It is therefore desirable to have a framework of categories for the classificat…
