  • On the Transformation of Philological Knowledge Orders and Information Stores at the Turn of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Open Access•Hans-Harald Muller, Tom Kindt et al.•CHAPTER•Years of National Philologies•2023

In the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, a fundamental change occurs in the communication system of the knowledge order of the philological sciences, in which the publishing system is also involved. Our contribution shows in an exemplary case study how the text type of the scientific encyclopaedia is replaced by that of the Grundriss in the major national philologies. Whereas the subject encyclopaedia served to present the …

    Hans-Harald Muller•ARTICLE•Aschkenas•2021

Arnold Zweig and Walter A. Berendsohn, who were in correspondence with each other between 1909 and 1968, continuously sought to convert the other to their beliefs. Around 1910 Zweig wanted to convert Berendsohn to Zionism as coined by Buber, while his views changed after his exile in Palestine, when he tried to win Berendsohn over to communism. Berendsohn, for his part, wanted to convince Zweig of social democracy around 1910, but after traveling…

  • Dilthey und einige Folgen

    Hans-Harald Muller, Mirko Nottscheid•ARTICLE•Internationales Archiv für…•2020

The first part of our text analyzes Dilthey’s seminal lecture and essay Archives of Literature in the context of his endeavors to form a philosophically founded empirical research program for the humanities. The second part describes the structure, aims, history, and activities of the Berliner Literatur-Archiv-Gesellschaft (LAG, 1891–1944) which was founded following Diltheyʼs essay. The third part compares the LAG with contemporary archives and …

  • Philologie und Gegenwartsliteratur

    Hans-Harald Muller•ARTICLE•Internationales Archiv für…•2015

My article maintains two theses: (1) Contrary to the tenacious myth that it allegedly neglected contemporary literature, academic literary studies, since its institutionalization at the end of the 19th century, in effect continuously deals with it. (2) The explication of the differences between literary studies and literary criticism is being neglected by both sides. Accordingly, not much more can be claimed but that they each follow different ob…

  • Praktizierte Germanistik

    Hans-Harald Muller, Myriam Richter et al.•BOOK•Praktizierte Germanistik•2013

  • Fremde Welten

    Lars Schmeink, Hans-Harald Muller•BOOK•Fremde Welten•2012

Until recently, scholars were hesitant to take the fantastic seriously. But since the 1990s, the increasing presence of the fantastic in mass media has spurred growing academic interest in the subject. This book discusses that new interest and brings together recent research in various disciplines. It provides an overview of current approaches and debates in the research of the fantastic. By taking stock of the present state of this young discipl…

  • Narratology and Interpretation

    Tom Kindt, Hans-Harald Muller•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•2003•References: 20

This contribution discusses the two programmatic assumptions made by David Darby in his outline of the history of narratology orErzähltheorie (narrative theory). The first is that narratology ought to be remodeled into a contextualist theory of interpretation; the second is that such a “contextualist narratology” necessarily requires the category of the “implied author.” By contrast, we argue that the “contextualists” can state convincing reasons …
