My article maintains two theses: (1) Contrary to the tenacious myth that it allegedly neglected contemporary literature, academic literary studies, since its institutionalization at the end of the 19th century, in effect continuously deals with it. (2) The explication of the differences between literary studies and literary criticism is being neglected by both sides. Accordingly, not much more can be claimed but that they each follow different objectives and apply different methodologies though they share the need to orientate toward the present
