  • The Sound of Data

Tristan Peng, Hongchan Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2024•References: 4

Parameter mapping sonification is a powerful tool for data display and analysis with uses in a myriad of fields of study. Despite the wide range of applications, parameter mapping sonification remains abstruse for people to utilize effectively. This article outlines an original design in the domain of parameter mapping sonification applications for a flexible, extensible, and intuitive web app that democratizes this data display method. • A Case study in Ecological Planning

Arthur H Johnson, Jonathan Berger et al.•CHAPTER•Ecological Design and Planning Read•2014

In reviewing the publications and reports in the regional and landscape planning literature and project reports from the profession, one finds a lack of uniformity in methodology, with ad hoc procedures "suited to the particular problem" a common approach. A method is presented in this chapter for determining the inherent suitability of a landscape for assimilating human activities and their artifacts. The approach is suggested in the writings of…

  • Analysis of Pitch Perception of Inharmonicity in Pipa Strings Using Response Surface Methodology

Shin Hui Lin Chin, Jonathan Berger•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The timbre of the pipa, one of the principal plucked string instruments of traditional Chinese music, is characterized by richly nuanced inharmonicity resulting from peculiarities of regionally distinct string composition and construction. This study investigates the effect of this feature of timbre on pitch perception. Beyond the specific issue of the pipa, we propose a response surface based experimental design and modelling approach as a gener…

  • Creative Aspects of Sonification

    Oded Ben-Tal, Oded Ben‐Tal et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Agoal of sonification research is the intuitive audio representation of complex, multidimensional data. The authors present two facets of this research that may provide insight into the creative process. First, they discuss aspects of categorical perception in nonverbal auditory scene analysis and propose that these characteristics are simplified models of creative engagement with sound. Second, they describe the use of sonified data in musical c…
