Developing an outcomes-based approach to achieving Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework
The draft Global Biodiversity Framework proposes to increase protected areas and OECMs to at least 30 per cent of land and ocean by 2030 (30x30). Such areas are central to conservation, but only if effectively managed and equitably governed. In practice, governments often recognise areas that do not achieve successful outcomes or respect human rights and fail to recognise other effective governance systems. We argue that protected areas and OECMs…

In-Rem Property in Adam Smith's Lectures on Jurisprudence
For decades, both economists and legal scholars have regularly used the metaphor of a ‘bundle of rights’ to describe property. In recent and growing literature, the bundle formulation has been the target of a number of critiques, some of which point to Adam Smith, among others, as a source for an alternative perspective on property. This paper examines Smith's work and argues that Smith is an appropriate authority and focal figure for a tradition…
Climate Change and Sustainable Development
Manifold linkages exist between climate change and sustainable development. Although these are starting to receive attention in the climate exchange literature, the focus has typically been on examining sustainable development through a climate change lens, rather than vice versa. And there has been little systematic examination of how these linkages may be fostered in practice. This paper examines climate change through a sustainable development…

Field and observer modes of remembering
Nigro and Neisser (1983) contrasted two ways of remembering personal experiences: the rememberer may 'see' the event from his or her perspective as in normal perception, or 'see' the self engaged in the event as an observer would. Several factors contribute to the determination of perspective, but Nigro and Neisser also reported that many subjects claimed they could change to another perspective at will. We sampled personal memories from several …

Rule Learning and Rule Interference in Trigram Encodings
The discovery and use of transformational rules as well as subsequent interference among such rules was investigated. 24 single-solution trigrams were permuted from their respective solution-words by a uniform letter-order rule (LOR) and assigned to one of 2 lists. LORs were either the same for both lists or different. Two control groups were included to assess the effects of practice on anagram solution and of prior rule-learning experience. Ss …
