  • Experimental Approach to the Study of the European Mode 1 Lithic Record: The Bipolar Core Technology at Vallparadís (Barcelona, Spain)

    Open Access•Policarpo Sánchez-Yustos, Joan García I Garriga et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 55

In this article we present an experimental approach focused on bipolar core technology. The main goal is to define the major constraints and parameters faced when identifying the bipolar component of the Early Pleistocene site of Vallparadís (Spain). For these experiments we have used the same varieties of raw materials and blanks as those documented in the archaeological record. The methodological framework applied in the study of the experiment…

The fi rst peopling of Europe has been widely discussed for the last decades. The many fi ndings recorded in recent years have confirmed that Europe was occupied by hominins during the Early Pleistocene for over a million years. However, several issues are still questioned in the current debate about the fi rst peopling of Europe, including the continuity or discontinuity of this event. In this regard, a revision of the available zooarchaeologica…

  • A new Lower Pleistocene archeological site in Europe (Vallparadís, Barcelona, Spain)

Open Access•Kenneth Martínez, Joan Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2010

Here we report the discovery of a new late Lower Pleistocene site named Vallparadís (Barcelona, Spain) that produced a rich archeological and paleontological sequence dated from the upper boundary of the Jaramillo subchron to the early Middle Pleistocene. This deposit contained a main archeological layer with numerous artifacts and a rich macromammalian assemblage, some of which bore cut marks, that could indicate that hominins had access to carc…
