  • Democratic Attitudes Among Members of Nonprofit Sports Clubs in Germany

Open Access•Michael Mutz, Sebastian Till Braun et al.•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2026•References: 20

This article examines democracy-related attitudes of German sports club members. It employs a framework derived from the neo-Tocquevillian theoretical works about democracy to argue that the depth of individual involvement in a club, in conjunction with the club’s political and democratic culture, is crucial for determining attitudes conveyed by members. A representative sample of the population ( N = 3,049) indicates that there is only a slight …

Open Access•Michael Mutz, Ulrike Burrmann et al.•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 26

It is widely believed that civic associations are capable to produce social capital, here understood as an individual asset resulting from relations of mutual support and assistance. Although hardly anybody denies that socializing is widespread in many civic associations, it still remains to be shown that this socializing provides a genuine commitment to support. This paper explores the relationship between involvement in civic organizations and …

  • In whom do we trust? The level and radius of social trust among sport club members

Open Access•Ulrike Burrmann, Sebastian Till Braun et al.•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 42

This paper refers to the widespread notion that voluntary (sport) organizations produce social capital, popularized through the works of Robert D. Putnam, and compares social trust levels of sport club members with members in other voluntary associations and non-members. We differentiate between in-group trust and out-group trust, highlighting that not only the level of trust but also the 'trust radius' counts for social cohesion in modern societ…

  • The Employment Effects of Immigration

Open Access•Sebastian Till Braun, Sebastian Braun et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•2014•Cited by: 7•References: 21

This article studies the employment effects of one of the largest forced population movements in history, the influx of millions of German expellees to West Germany after World War II. This episode of forced mass migration provides a unique setting to study the causal effects of immigration. Expellees were not selected on the basis of skills or labor market prospects and, as ethnic Germans, were close substitutes to native West Germans. Expellee …

The flight and expulsion of Germans from Eastern Europe after World War II constitutes one of the largest forced population movements in history. We analyse the economic integration of these migrants and their offspring in West Germany. A quarter century after displacement, first‐generation migrants still tend to fare worse economically. Displaced agricultural workers, however, exhibit higher incomes than comparable natives, as displacement cause…

Using an administrative data set containing daily information on individual workers' employment histories, we investigate how workers' labour market transitions are affected by international outsourcing. In order to do so, we estimate hazard rate models for match separations, as well as for worker flows from employment to another job, to unemployment, and to nonparticipation. Outsourcing has a positive but small impact on overall job stability in…

  • Bürgerschaftliches Engagement — Konjunktur und Ambivalenz einer gesellschaftspolitischen Debatte

    Sebastian Till Braun, Sebastian Braun•ARTICLE•Leviathan•2001

„Civic engagement“ is one of the main topics in the current political and scientific debate in Germany. However, the numerous declarations and publications confuse rather than contribute to the clarification of the various contexts, in which civic engagement is discussed. This paper tries to clarify the current debate and to point out fundamental contradictions and lacunas. For this purpose, five basic questions are analysed: (1) How can we expla…
