Law and Grace
The Ethiopian Church, established in 330, is the second earliest “national” church created on the model of Emperor Constantine’s conversion of the Roman Empire. Today Christianity comes in numerous variants. But Ethiopia’s church alone privileges Mosaic tradition as the bedrock of its theology. The rational for this is “The Glory of Kings,” a book inspired by 1Kings10: 1–13. It tells how a Queen of Sheba (Ethiopia) visited King Solomon in Jerusal…
Norman Ingham, Scholar and Golfer, and the History of Golf in Russia
This contribution is a celebration of Norman Ingham as a passionate scholar and golfer. It also explores the history of golf in Russia from the founding of the first golf facility in 1992 in Moscow to the spread of golf courses in European Russia and Siberia. Finally, it speculates on what Norman might have encountered had he had the opportunity to play these courses
Exploring Ethnic Variation in the Relationship Between Stress, Social Networks, and Depressive Symptoms Among Older Black Americans
The relationship between different types of stressors and depressive symptoms among older Black populations is poorly understood. Even less is known about the social networks that might buffer different stressors on individuals within Black ethnic groups. The purpose of this study was to examine whether there are differences in the relationship between stress and social networks on depressive symptoms by ethnic group while ethnicity functioned as…
Rolling Downhill
Austerity policies have been instituted in countries around the world attempting to address the fallout from the global economic crisis beginning in 2008 and still lingering through today. While the literature debates the economic impact of these policies, limited attention has been given to the effects of austerity at the local governmental level. It is posited that at the local government level, the effects of austerity policies are most notice…
Long Term Care Insurance Beyond the CLASS Program
The Community Living Assistance and Supports (CLASS) program, created under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, established a federally-administered, voluntary insurance program that allows for working adults to purchase insurance to cover the cost of long term support services. The CLASS program is the first step towards moving away from a welfare-based system, improving consumer choice, and creating a stable funding source for long …

The need for more research involving African American males across the life course has never been in greater demand than the present. Multiple indicators of health and well-being continue to suggest that this segment of the population is confronted by a host of environmental, psychological, and social challenges. Consequently, African American males tend to fare poorly with regard to social indicators of health and well-being – regardless of age.…

Nature's Call and Experiential Nonlinearities
Gilbert Gottlieb was an elegant experimentalist whose research was inspired in part by naturalistic observations of parent-offspring vocal-auditory interactions of waterfowl. Such observations are essential in identifying potential linear (obvious) as well as nonlinear (subtle) mechanisms underlying the development of species-typical behavior. His series of experiments on the development of species identification in birds illustrates the fruitful…

An Exploratory Study of the Urban Hassles Index
Objective: This article discusses continued development of the Urban Hassles Index (UHI). The stressors identified in the UHI are chronic and differ substantively from the more acute life events indexes typically employed to measure adolescent stress. Method: Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify the underlying factor structure of the UHI. Structural equation modeling was used to define the relationship between the latent factors and t…
Nested reciprocities
The ecological approach to studying perception and action is one in which researchers view the structure in ambient energy arrays surrounding a given organism as being sufficient to specify meaningful environmental properties to that organism. Thus, from this perspective, perception is viewed not as a cognitive achievement but as a lawful state of affairs that exists in an organism–environment system. The approach to studying development known as…
What’s There and What’s Not
Objective: A review of current empirical research on adolescent stress reveals that measures of stress were developed using primarily suburban adolescents. However, there has not been a thorough examination of stressors that specifically affect urban minority adolescents. This article discusses the findings from the Urban Hassles Scale (UHS). Method: A nonrandom sample of 131 African American adolescents was surveyed to assess the stressors withi…

Fear of Aids and Homophobia Scales
Psychometric properties of the Fear of AIDS Scale and the Homophobia Scale from 85 heterosexual undergraduates (and 44 gay, lesbian, and bisexual undergraduates) were estimated. Responses on the Homophobia Scale were internally consistent (alpha = .88), had 4% standard error of measurement, and scores differed by subjects' sexual orientation. Responses to Fear of AIDS Scale were moderately internally consistent (alpha = .75), had 12% standard err…

The Cult of Saint Sergius of Radonezh and Its Political Uses
One hundred years ago, on the occasion of the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, Vasilii Osipovich Kliuchevskii delivered the principal address to the Moscow Theological Academy. With his first tortuously long sentence the historian created an imaginary continuum, transcending time, between his audience and the saint. His words bear repeating:While entering the gates of the Sergius Lavra in the midst of a wave o…

A "Case-Study" Approach to Electrical Energy Engineering
A powerful method for learning basic engineering principles involves the study of a set of specially defined "cases." The method has attractive motivational aspects since it immediately involves the student in applications. This technique is well suited for energy ("power") engineering education; a list of suitable subjects is presented, and four of these are expanded as an example of a set of projects for a semester course
Ionization Technology in Modern Power Education
Ionization phenomena will continue to occur in a growing variety of critical situations in electric power systems, and some understanding of this area is therefore required in many power engineering positions. The inductive educational technique, in which basic principles are developed from study of specific examples, is presented as a favorable method for covering this material in modern electrical engineering curricula. To achieve this objectiv…
