Studying the remains of aviation accidents in the Occitanie region of France from the 1910s to the late 1940s
The study focuses on the remains of aviation accidents in France’s Occitanie region, combining historical research, aeronautical archaeology and materials science. The goal was to document accidents using archives, eyewitness accounts and field investigations. The geolocated database reports 685 accidents and highlights accident clusters, first along the pioneering airmail routes of the Latécoère Lines (1919–1927) and then in Haute-Garonne and Py…
Protection efficiency of zinc chromate-based historical primers
Preliminary study of the anti-corrosion performance of different protection systems applied to two World War II aluminium alloy archaeological objects with different surface finishes
Duralumin Alloys in World War II Heritage Aircraft
Duralumin-type alloys have been employed for structural and non-structural parts of aircraft since the early 1920s up to now. In the European project “PROtection and Conservation of Heritage AirCRAFT” (PROCRAFT), up to 34 aircraft wrecks from World War II from different nations (United States of America, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy) were identified. On most of them, the collection of numerous fragments was possible, thus constituting a…
Conservation of a WWII Supermarine Spitfire section wing
This study focuses on a WWII Supermarine Spitfire aircraft section wing conservation, salvaged from the seabed in 1988 and stored in a private garden. The object was in poor condition so decisions on the conservation, preservation or removal of parts of the original elements were needed. Firstly, the wing fragment was studied to determine its heritage interest and to assess its historical, industrial, technical and scientific values. This object …
Historical primers and paints used for aeronautical protection and colouring during WWII
Multi-techniques for consistent determination of historical aeronautical paints composition. • Identification of the main fillers and pigments in the aeronautical paints of four nations: Germany , France, USA and Italy. • Nitrocellulose base-paint was traditionally applied on French and German WWII aircraft. • Study providing useful information for conservation and restoration. Aeronautics for military or civil applications effectively pushed sci…
Comparison of Aluminum Alloys from Aircraft of Four Nations Involved in the WWII Conflict Using Multiscale Analyses and Archival Study
Aluminum alloys are very interesting witnesses of industrial and technical development. The first ever developed was Duralumin, a light metal with good mechanical properties. In the 1930s, the rise of nationalism stimulated research and development, generating various aluminum alloys. This work reports the comparison of two versions of aluminum alloys, which were found in collected parts of WWII crashed aircraft from four nations: a Messerschmitt…
