A strike in the time of Covid-19 pandemic
A short health workers’ strike held in early 2020 in Hong Kong at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrates the importance of democratic framing of social movement unionism. A trade union was established during a period of massive civil unrest against the local government in 2019 and then proceeded to organise a strike within 2 months of formation to pressure both their employer and the government to enhance citizen and health workers’ safe…
Enterprise Unions
Enterprise unions are labor unions organized and controlled by a membership employed within a single enterprise. Enterprise unions are usually referenced as Japanese‐style enterprise‐based labor unions, which have formed industrial federations and made up the majority of union membership in Japan since the 1960s. Thus, there are two approaches to defining “enterprise unions”: the first is to examine the characteristics of unions based on a single…
The Transformation of Japanese Employment Relations
It would be possible to measure the changing fortunes of Japan’s postwar economy in terms of the number of books published that focus on its domestic industrial relations system, and since the end of the so-called bubble economy, there has been a decline in such monographs. This unfortunate, because we learn most about the true nature of a social system when it faces stress and crisis, and the experiences of the Japanese economy over the past 25 …

Child abuse, child protection, and defensive ‘touch’ in PE teaching and sports coaching
This text introduces recently completed research on ‘no touch’ sports coaching, by placing it in a broader social context which problematises the way child abuse and child protection (or safeguarding) are conceived and discussed in terms of policy and practice. It also provides a brief indicative summary of the research findings and offers a discussion of moral panic, risk society and worst case thinking, before drawing on Foucault's work on gove…
Safeguarding’ sports coaching
This paper offers a genealogical account of safeguarding in sport. Drawing specifically on Foucault's work, it examines the ‘politics of touch’ in relation to the social and historical formation of child protection policy in sports coaching. While the analysis has some resonance with the context of coaching as a whole, for illustrative purposes it focuses principally upon the sport of swimming. Our analysis demonstrates how the linked signifiers …
Sports coaching in risk society
This paper is informed by a UK based Economic and Social Research Council funded research project which developed and deployed a case-study approach to issues of touch between children and professionals in schools and childcare. Outcomes from these settings are referred to, but the focus here is shifted to touch in sports coaching and its distinctive contextual and institutional characteristics. We consider the broader context of no touch coachin…
Extreme Sea Surge Responses to Climate Variability in Coastal British Columbia, Canada
This article presents a statistical investigation of the spatial and temporal changes of extreme sea surges in response to climate variability in coastal British Columbia. The study was based on an investigation of in situ hourly tide gauge data spanning the interval from 1950 to 2007 at eleven tide gauges in the region. The characteristics of the recorded extreme sea surges were parametrically modeled by the generalized extreme value distributio…
Greater China and Japan
Contemporary relations between Greater China and Japan have been conditioned both by differing responses to the impact of Western colonialism during the mid-nineteenth century and the legacy of the Cold War. There are mutual suspicions: the Chinese fear of a Japanese military revival and the Japanese concern over increasing Chinese economic competition and territorial ambitions.Robert Taylor recognises the mistrust in Sino-Japanese relations, but…
The professionalisation of sports coaching
This paper examines the changing landscape of the professionalisation of sports coaching and is presented in response to the dearth of empirical research and peer-reviewed literature existing within the field. This absence or ‘lack’ has, in turn, created a political context in which the discourses that inhabit transitions towards professionalism are becoming increasingly rigid and inflexible. Policies too, have exacerbated this situation, creatin…
China's creative approach to ‘union’ organizing
The development of industrial relations in China is moving into a critical period in which capitalism has become the dominant form of social organization. Official unions have sought to adapt to the changing environment through a range of initiatives through each level of their organizational structure. This paper explores the inherent problem in official unions by examining a period at the end of the 1990s when decline in the traditional organiz…

A Feminist Critique of Japanization
The debate over lean production and Japanization has now matured, with a broad range of perspectives and analysis. Through analysis of the central role women’s labour plays in Japanese-owned enterprises, this article will provide a critical discussion of Japanization. Japanization is neither a sufficient explanation of the nature of workplaces in which women work, nor a necessary goal for labour management in Japanese-owned enterprises. Using ext…

Japanese management style in China? Production practices in Japanese manufacturing plants
Through an examination of twenty Japanese owned manufacturing plants in China, this article seeks to question the usefulness of identifying Japanese competitive success as being associated with specific Japanese production management techniques. Rather Japanese plants adopt, seemingly profitably, various and differentiated production methods, depending on local and parent company circumstances

Population Explosions and Housing, 1550—1850
An examination of the surviving building and alterations carried out in response to the early nineteenth-century population increase in Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire reveals two separate phases. The first consists mainly of subdivision of existing houses, whereas the second consists mainly of building new dwellings. This general sequence can be applied to earlier population increases, and would help explain some of the instances where a lar…

South Africa
In the 1948 election, which saw the National Party come to power, the meaning of apartheid was more fluid than is commonly supposed. Its essence, however, was clearly segregation: a means of effectively instituting white privilege through the statutory differentiation of whites, coloureds, Indians and Africans. A core assumption held “that races are the fundamental divisions of humanity and that different races possess inherently different cultur…

Town Houses in Taunton, 1500-1700
In this article the author traces the evolution of the small to medium-sized town houses in Taunton in the period 1500–1700. He describes surviving examples of three, two and single cell houses, L-shaped, detached and semi-detached houses of the period, and after discussing building materials, compares them with developments elsewhere in the South West

An Eighteenth-Century Cambridgeshire Helm
The nature of helms or hovels has been explored in the current and previous two volumes of Vernacular Architecture.
