  • Co‐Design of a Community of Practice for People With Personal and Professional Expertise or Interest in Dementia in Australia

Open Access•Eliza Watson, Sadia Afrin et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2026

BACKGROUND: Communities of practice offer an opportunity to break down siloes for those with personal and professional experience of dementia. We aimed to design the Dementia Learning and Research Community in Australia, a virtual space to bring people with an interest or experience of dementia together to learn from each other, and provide opportunities for education and networking. METHODS: A three-phase co-design process was conducted, consist…

  • Development of a Patient and Carer Advisory Board to Co‐Design Health Services Research for the Quality of Care of People With Dementia

    Open Access•Daniel X Bailey, Jane Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2026

INTRODUCTION: Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) is becoming increasingly common in research and is now a requirement by many funding bodies. In this paper, we describe a PPI Board that was formed to bring lived experience expertise to the research conception, development and implementation of the evaluating quality care (eQC) project, which focussed on improving the care of older people and people living with dementia in acute care hospitals. …

  • Early Implementation and Evaluation of StepUp for Dementia Research

Open Access•Yun-Hee Jeon, Mirim Shin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Recruiting participants for dementia research takes time. For those who are interested, opportunities to participate can be ad hoc . Delays in finding the right participants can result in studies taking longer to deliver, often requiring funding extensions, and ultimately increasing the cost and limiting the effectiveness of research and evaluation. To address these issues, a digital platform, StepUp for Dementia Research, was developed in 2019 a…

  • Rapid Needs Appraisal in the modern NHS

Open Access•Ruth Balogh, Sandy Whitelaw et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2008

This paper reports on our experience of undertaking a Rapid Appraisal of Health and Social Needs (RNA) in West Cumbria, UK. RNA aims to identify community-defined problems and to collect intelligence for action rather than simply for documentation. The broad nature of the study is summarised and we reflect critically on methodological and structural issues that arose. A number of inter-related themes were significant: the limitations of a ‘rapid’…

    Jane Thompson•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2006

The Herculaneum Conservation Project is an innovative public/private initiative to safeguard and conserve, to enhance, and to advance the knowledge, understanding and public appreciation of the archaeological site of Herculaneum, Italy. This article traces, from a project management perspective, how this collaborative venture was created and how it continues to evolve. The project is analysed as a response to the widespread and exponential decay …

Making use of theory, reflection, narrativity and auto/biographical writing, Jane Thompson provides a comprehensive understanding of what learning really means, and what education can contribute to the struggles of working class women intent on changing the circumstances of their lives. Organized into three parts, in the first section, Thompson draws on autobiographical experience to root theoretical understanding in the authority of personal kno…

  • Sexism in the Seminar

    Jane Thompson•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•1995•Cited by: 2

In our roles as tutors we recognise a reluctance for students, particularly men, to become involved in discussion around 'gender' with any serious level of engagement. In order to address this, we have begun developing ideas that prompt discussion in seminars on gender issues with a view to raising awareness and creating a greater sensitivity. In this paper we share with readers ideas and materials that may be used to prompt such discussion. We a…
