  • Physical and Psychological Health Predict Adherence to an Online Mindfulness Program for College Students

Open Access•Daniel Gutierrez, Leila Forbes et al.•ARTICLE•Counseling and Values•2020

We examined predictors of students’ adherence to a 10-session online mindfulness program. Undergraduates naive to meditation ( N = 169) were recruited from an introductory psychology subject pool. Students completed assessments examining physical and psychological health and were asked to complete a 10-session online mindfulness activity. More than half (53%) of the sample was fully adherent to the program. Better physical health and lower levels…

  • Trait Mindfulness and Cognitive Task Performance

    Open Access•Emalee J W Quickel, Susan K Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2014•References: 42

Mindfulness meditation (MM) training has been shown to have positive effects on working memory and focused attention tasks. Clarifying the construct of mindfulness is important so that mindfulness can be studied effectively in individual differences and cognition research. The current study tested whether trait mindfulness alone explains any of the variability on task performance. Five commonly used mindfulness scales, as well as six standardized…

  • An investigation of victimization and the clinical course of chronic fatigue syndrome

    Open Access•Susan K Johnson, Karen B Schmaling et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 39

Medically unexplained syndromes, including chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), have been associated with victimization in childhood and adulthood. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of victimization experiences in childhood and adulthood with functional status and illness severity in a sample of patients with CFS using longitudinal data. In the sample of 93 patients with CFS, childhood abuse and neglect had greater impact than …

  • The First ‘Designer Baby’

Brigitte Nerlich, Susan Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Science as Culture•2003•Cited by: 8

The public do not like, and we do not like the idea of designer babies (Ruth Deech, then Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, quoted in The Independent, 18 October 2000). We are all on the slippery slope-the question we should be asking is: skis or crampons (Professor John Harris, The Centre for Social Ethics and Policy, University of Manchester, in an interview with Susan Johnson). LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL GROUNDING OF THE D…

  • Assessing Somatization Disorder in the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Susan K Johnson, John Deluca et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1996

This study was conducted to examine the rates of somatization disorder (SD) in the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) relative to other fatiguing illness groups. It further addressed the arbitrary nature of the judgments made in assigning psychiatric vs. physical etiology to symptoms in controversial illnesses such as CFS. Patients with CFS (N = 42), multiple sclerosis (MS) (N = 18), and depression (N = 21) were compared with healthy individuals (N =…

  • The language of psychology

Robert Madigan, Susan Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1995•Cited by: 13•References: 3

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (4th ed., APA, 1994) is a guide for many aspects of professional writing for psychologists. In this article, the authors propose that APA style involves more than a set of explicit guidelines for presenting information; it also incorporates a variety of unarticulated practices that reflect fundamental attitudes and values of psychologists. The authors examine some of the less obviou…

  • The role of internal standards in assessment of written discourse

    Susan Johnson, Susan K Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•1994•References: 17

Writers evaluate works in progress to make critical editorial decisions about content and style. It is proposed that this evaluative process is guided by a writer's internal standards, which define when writing is correct, appropriate, and complete. An analysis of the internal standards concept leads to the prediction that the match between the standards of the writer and the standards of readers should be an important predictor of how the reader…
