Feasibility, Acceptability, and Preliminary Effectiveness of Family Navigation for Low-income Ethnoracially Diverse Preschoolers with Developmental Concern
Associations between lifetime stress exposure, race, and first-birth intendedness in the United States
This study examined how lifetime stress exposure and race are associated with first-birth intendedness, and whether these associations differ based on stress exposure timing. Greater lifetime stress exposure was related to increased first-birth intendedness for black women but was unrelated or even associated with decreased first-birth intendedness for white women, depending on stress exposure timing. These effects were robust while controlling f…
Investigating the reliability and validity of the Toddler Home Learning Environment (THLE) scale
Home learning environments prior to school are well-known predictors of educational trajectories but research has neglected children aged under three. The new Toddler Home Learning Environment (THLE) scale is one response and this paper investigates its reliability and validity. The THLE is an adaptation of the Preschool HLE (PHLE) measure developed by the Effective Pre-School Primary and Secondary Education (EPPSE) investigation in the 1990s. Th…
Application of Sars-CoV-2 Serology to Address Public Health Priorities
Background: Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 can be detected by various testing platforms, but a detailed understanding of assay performance is critical. Methods: We developed and validated a simple enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect IgG binding to the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2, which was then applied for surveillance. ELISA results were compared to a set of complimentary serologic assays using a large panel of cli…
Assessing foods offered in the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) using the Healthy Eating Index 2010

Design Data were collected from the list of the food products provided by the US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Handbook 501 for FDPIR . Evaluating Children's Centres in England
Children's Centres are a new form of provision for young children and their families which aim to bring together early years education and care, health, welfare and family support services. This paper traces the history of the development of Children's Centres, the research evidence underpinning them, and the policy context under the Labour government elected in 1997, and sets out the challenges for the research now commissioned. The policy drive…
Early Years services in Britain 1997‐2007
This article analyses UK Early Years policy in terms of service expansion and service transformation since the Labour Government's election in 1997. Childcare is now a matter of public policy, driven largely by concerns about child poverty and inequalities in children's life chances. The evidence is considered, first, on service expansion, increased take‐up and increased employment by parents with young children, and, second, on service transform…

Halsey has been a professorial fellow (now emeritus) at Nuffield College in Oxford University since his appointment in 1962 as Director of Oxford’s Department of Social and Administrative Studies. This paper explores his contribution to education throughout his career, as an academic and as a national and international policy advisor, and the interface between these two. Halsey worked in what he termed the ‘political arithmetic’ tradition t…
The Effectiveness of EMDR in a Child Guidance Center
Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of adding EMDR to the routine treatment regimen of child therapists. Method: Thirty-nine child guidance center clients were randomly assigned to an experimental group that received EMDR plus the center’s routine treatment package or a control group that received only the center’s routine treatment package. Results: Analyses of variance found no significant differences in Child Behavior Checklist s…
Neighbourhood and preventive strategies with children and families
This paper argues that the 1989 Children Act has provided a poor context for discussing ‘prevention’. The Act has not helped the development of either a proper understanding of childhood disadvantages or policies to deal with it. This paper presents a fresh perspective on ‘prevention’ in the context of Government initiatives such as Sure Start, and argues for analysis of neighbourhood disadvantages and neighbourhood‐based policies. The ‘geography…

New computer techniques for geo‐spatial analysis—Geographical Information Systems—ore now muck used by local authorities in planning environmental and engineering services. This article explores the extent to which these techniques can be applied to social data and, in particular, whether they are useful for strategic planning of day care and…
