Representation and diversity in the sign language translation and interpreting profession in the United Kingdom
This article reports the findings of a nationwide sign language translator and interpreter (SLTI) census to establish a baseline description of the United Kingdom’s SLTI workforce that was commissioned by the Association of Sign Language Interpreters UK. Complete responses were received from 690 practitioners from across the United Kingdom (43% of the potential sample). The survey responses were analysed using the SPSS statistical software, speci…
Landscape Composition Affects Elements of Metacommunity Structure for Culicidae Across South-Eastern Illinois
The interplay among invasive alien vectors and the species assemblage of native potential vectors in areas of range expansion may affect the dynamics of pathogen transmission. In this study we investigate how Aedes albopictus , an invasive mosquito of considerable public health concern fits within mosquito communities at the edge of its range of distribution. This was addressed using a 2-year field survey of mosquitoes in south-eastern Illinois. …
Sensory ecologies and semiotic assemblages during British Sign Language interpreted weather forecasts
We present a study examining broadcast British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted weather forecasts. These are filmed against a green screen with a superimposed composite image broadcast including maps and satellite information, etc. that can be indexed. We examine the semiotic resources used when interacting with the available visible on-screen information to the viewing audiences. The forecasters and interpreters tailor their multimodal communicat…
The implications of Chinese strategic culture and counter-intervention upon Department of Defense space deterrence operations
The People's Republic of China (PRC) and its rapidly evolving space forces are viewed to be one of the principal threats to the United States' national security space infrastructure and the U.S. capability for timely force projection in the Pacific Theater. This view, especially since the 2007 kinetic anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons test, added emphasis to the Space Posture Review of 2010 and the Department of Defense's quest for deterrence as a me…
Do different psychological types look for different things in sermons? A research note
A sample of 76 Evangelical Anglican churchgoers completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales and rated the importance that they attribute to a sermon speaking to their imagination. The data demonstrated that sermons speaking to the imagination were rated more highly by intuitive types, feeling types, and perceiving types than by sensing types, thinking types, and judging types. Different psychological types look for different things in sermons

Translation, representation and the Deaf 'voice
In this article, we introduce a complex world of working with qualitative data in multiple languages, modalities and media. We share some of the theoretical considerations that influenced our decisions about when to translate, what and how. We also report some of the multiple possibilities available to the researcher when analysing data in a visual language - in this case, British Sign Language - sharing considerations in choosing one method over…
Georg Lukács and the Improbable Realism of Sun Allah Ibrāhīm’s The Committee
By a traditional definition of “realism” Sun Allah Ibrāhīm’s The Committee is perhaps the least “realistic” of his novels. The novel ends, for example, with the protagonist eating himself. This paper examines The Committee through the lens of the Marxist critic Georg Lukács’s definition of realism, a definition that prioritizes hope over feasibility. The opposite of realism for Lukács is modernism, which he defines, among other ways, by its depen…

Living Words
Playwright Robert E. Sherwood is largely forgotten in 2008. In 1938, however, his play Abe Lincoln in Illinois was the toast of Broadway and Sherwood was one of America's foremost public intellectuals. Although his plays never joined the likes of Our Town, Death of a Salesman or Streetcar Named Desire in the popular canon, Sherwood was a skillful, respected, earnest craftsman who consistently achieved commercial and critical success and won sever…
Popular Culture and Nationalism in Lebanon
Based on an award-winning thesis, this volume is a pioneering study of musical theatre and popular culture and its relation to the production of identity in Lebanon in the second half of the twentieth century. In the aftermath of the departure of the French from Lebanon and the civil violence of 1958, the Rahbani brothers (Asi and Mansour) staged a series of folkloric musical theatrical extravaganzas at the annual Ba‘labakk festival which highlig…
Tracing police accountability in theory and practice
Police around the world are becoming more accountable for their use of force against civilians. Scholars have contributed to this movement both by building the field conceptually and by working in partnership with officials to construct specific accountability mechanisms. In both roles, scholars have begun to conceive of police accountability in structural terms, as a condition achieved through an array of separate institutional mechanisms. Drawi…
My Beliefs are in My Song
With the lyric, “Sometimes I'm right and I can be wrong/My own beliefs are in my song,” Sly and the Family Stone began “Everday People” (1969), the song that proved the most popular and acclaimed track by the innovative and self-destructive Sly Stone (born Sylvester Stewart) (1). His work encapsulates much of the spirit of the mythic Sixties. His interracial and intergender band's potent fusion of pop, rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, and soul tapped into …
