Lifesavers and Body Snatchers
De-picturing John A. Macdonald
This article explores the historiographical and methodological opportunities and challenges of graphic history to represent, interpret, and interrogate Canada’s past. Graphic history is a research-creation approach that combines word and picture to produce illustrated texts and comic book-style narratives. While I address important critiques about academic rigour, pedagogical value, and practical viability, I argue that graphic history has much p…
Quantification of stone artefacts assemblages in Aotearoa New Zealand
Many of the popular models of pre-European Māori settlement rely on the quantification of stone artefact abundance when made from different raw materials. Relative proportions of these materials provide the basis for inferences about mobility, trade and exchange, and social interactions. However, a number of methods for calculating artefact abundance exist with these reflecting different aspects of artefact completeness, fragmentation, and artefa…

Conduct Unbecoming an Officer and a Doctor
This article explores the criminalization and medicalization of homosexuality within military culture during World War II through the general court martial of Flight Lieutenant Percy Ryberg, a medical officer stationed in the United Kingdom with the Royal Canadian Air Force. In December 1944, Ryberg faced a charge of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman for renting a London apartment with airmen accused of homosexual activity. The unusua…

Worthless Cheques and Financial Honour
A social history of dishonoured cheques offers unique insights into notions of gentlemanliness and masculinity during the First World War by tracing Canadian officers' personal interactions and financial transactions. Prosecuting cheque fraud by general court martial often required overseas authorities to intrude on private affairs of officers, thus marking the uncertain divide between military discipline and public scandal. Despite the idealized…

Natural leaders of a democratic army’
During the First World War, 25 Canadian members of the federal Parliament and provincial legislatures recruited infantry battalions from their constituencies. Perceiving themselves to be Canada’s ‘natural leaders’, middle-aged parliamentary colonels believed prominence and success in public life exemplified the qualities of moral leadership and strong character necessary for military command. After landing in England, however, the vast majority o…
