Radiocarbon Dates from the Oxford AMS System: Archaeometry Datelist 36
This is the thirty‐sixth list of AMS radiocarbon determinations measured at the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (ORAU). Amongst some of the sites included here are the latest series of determinations from the key sites of El Mirón (Spain) and Sutton Courtney (UK), as well as others dating to the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and later periods. Submitters of the material provide comments on the significance of the results
Radiocarbon Dates from the O xford AMS S ystem: A rchaeometry Datelist 35
This is the 35th list of AMS radiocarbon determinations measured at the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (ORAU). Amongst some of the sites included here are the latest series of determinations from the key sites of Abydos, El Mirón, Ban Chiang, Grotte de Pigeons (Taforalt), Alepotrypa and Oberkassel, as well as others dating to the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and later periods. Comments on the significance of the results are provided by the submi…
Investigation of the ‘canopy effect’ in the isotope ecology of temperate woodlands
Assessing natural variation and the effects of charring, burial and pre-treatment on the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values of archaeobotanical cereals and pulses
Origins of the Iberomaurusian in NW Africa: New AMS radiocarbon dating of the Middle and Later Stone Age deposits at Taforalt Cave, Morocco
Uncovering a landscape buried by the super-eruption of Toba, 74,000 years ago: A multi-proxy environmental reconstruction of landscape heterogeneity in the Jurreru Valley, south India
Sprouting Like Cockle Amongst the Wheat’: The St Brice's Day Massacre and the Isotopic Analysis of Human Bones From St John's College, Oxford
The recent discovery in St John's College of a mass burial of mostly young adult males with severe perimortem blade trauma has prompted the suggestion that these may be related to the St Brice's Day Massacre in Oxford on 13th November AD 1002. Three radiocarbon determinations suggest that a date in the tenth century is more likely. We have nevertheless undertaken an isotopic study of the bone collagen (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) and dental enamel (δ 13 C…
Radiocarbon Dates From the Oxford Ams System: Archaeometry Datelist 34
This is the thirty‐fourth list of AMS radiocarbon determinations measured at the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (ORAU). Amongst the dates obtained for archaeological sites included here are the latest series of determinations from the key sites of Proskynas (Greece), Kovačevo (Bulgaria) and Khirbet Qeiyafa (Israel), as well as others dating to the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and later periods. Submitters of the material provide comments on the …
These boots were made for walking”: The isotopic analysis of a C 4 Roman inhumation from Gravesend, Kent, UK
As part of the road widening scheme between London and Dover, Oxford Archaeology South uncovered a large boundary ditch of Iron Age origin that contained Iron Age and Roman inhumations, adjacent to which was a small mid‐late Roman cemetery, interpreted as a rural cemetery for Romano‐British farmers. Grave goods in the cemetery were restricted to a few individuals with hobnailed boots. Bulk bone collagen isotopic analysis of 11 skeletons of Iron A…
The Chehr Abad “Salt men” and the isotopic ecology of humans in ancient Iran
We have carried out isotopic analysis ( δ 13 C and δ 15 N ) on five salt‐preserved bodies from the salt mine at Chehr Abad, Iran, dating from the 4th C. BC through to the 4th C. AD. In an attempt to identify the geographical origins of these people, we have analyzed over a hundred archeological bone samples from various archeological sites in Iran. From the faunal remains, we observe that the entire ecosystem appears to be enriched in 15 N, which…
The Azokh Cave complex: Middle Pleistocene to Holocene human occupation in the Caucasus
Radiocarbon Dates From the Oxford Ams System: Archaeometry Datelist 33
This is the thirty-third list of dates measured at the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (ORAU). The dates presented here include those measured through the NERC/AHRC-funded Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Dating Service (ORADS), those funded by English Heritage, and those submitted to the laboratory on a commercial basis. All dates have been measured using the procedures outlined in Law and Hedges (1989), Hedges et al. (1989, 1992), Bronk Ramse…
Radiocarbon Dates From the Oxford Ams System: Archaeometry Datelist 32
This thirty-second list of dates measured at the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (ORAU) is predominantly made up of those measured since the start of 1996. However, it also includes some dates measured earlier which have not been published in previous lists. The dates presented here include those measured through the NERC/AHRC-funded Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Dating Service (ORADS), those funded by English Heritage, and those submitted t…
