Report on the questionnaire of the safety management for field research in the Primate Society of Japan
First noncontact millimeter‐wave radar measurement of heart rate in great apes
Heart rate is a crucial vital sign and a valuable indicator for assessing the physical and psychological condition of a target animal. Heart rate contributes to (1) fundamental information for cognitive research, (2) an indicator of psychological and physical stress, and (3) improving the animal welfare of captive animals, especially in nonhuman primate studies. Heart rate has been measured using a contact‐type device; however, the device burdens…
The association between exposure to hate speech or perceived discrimination and mental health problems among Korean residents in Japan
This study evaluated the effect of perceived discrimination and racism on the mental health state of Korean residents in Japan, with a particular focus on the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and psychological distress. Surveys were sent to Korean residents in Japan and a total of 240 valid responses were received. The valid response rate was 27.1%. The participants answered several questionnaire items, including demogra…
An interspecies comparison of the weaning process in primates
In this paper, I discuss the relationship between social organization and offspring-rearing methods, which are starting to be used as a novel indicator in interspecies societal comparisons. Additionally, I clarify the relationship between the intimacy of the mother–offspring relationship and the development of foraging in the offspring. I suggest that the establishment of a base camp in human evolution is important not only to facilitate effectiv…
Higher synchronization stability with piano experience
Background Synchronous finger tapping to external sensory stimuli is more stable for audiovisual combined stimuli than sole auditory or visual stimuli. In addition, piano players are superior in synchronous tapping and manipulating the ring and little fingers as compared to inexperienced individuals. However, it is currently unknown whether the ability to synchronize to external sensory stimuli with the ring finger is at the level of the index fi…
Introduction of practical examples of outreach activities for high school students at academic conferences
Female chimpanzees giving first birth in their natal group in Mahale
Current Status and Future Perspectives of Wildlife Research in Africa
Investigation of paleoclimate signatures in Sfax deep groundwater (Southeastern Tunisia) using environmental isotopes and noble gases
Opportunistic feeding strategy in wild immature chimpanzees
Wild chimpanzees deprived a leopard of its kill
Developmental changes in feeding behaviors of infant chimpanzees at Mahale, Tanzania
OBJECTIVES: Weaning of chimpanzees is considered to occur at 4-5-years-old with complete cessation of nipple contact and timing of reconception calculated by inter-birth interval minus gestation length. This is also the basis of "early weaning" in humans (i.e., approximately 2.5-years-old). However, recent studies of the survival of orphans and the first molar (M1) eruption in wild chimpanzees have predicted that infants move toward nutritional i…
An observation of a severely disabled infant chimpanzee in the wild and her interactions with her mother
Experimental Primate Archaeology
Non-human primates using stones in nature provide a rare opportunity to compare directly the behaviour of use with the resulting lithic artifacts. Wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) customarily do “stone handling” (SH = spontaneous, solitary, non-instrumental and seemingly playful manipulation of stones). Ten populations of monkeys show at least 48 behavioral variants, 13 of which entail repeated stone-on-stone or stone-on-substrate contact …
