Maternal Metals/Metalloid Blood Levels Are Associated With Lipidomic Profiles Among Pregnant Women in Puerto Rico
Background/Aim: The association between heavy metal exposure and adverse birth outcomes is well-established. However, there is a paucity of research identifying biomarker profiles that may improve the early detection of heavy metal-induced adverse birth outcomes. Because lipids are abundant in our body and associated with important signaling pathways, we assessed associations between maternal metals/metalloid blood levels with lipidomic profiles …

Trends in US Health Insurance Coverage During the Covid-19 Pandemic
In this cross-sectional study of data from the US Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey, results showed that while public programs played an important role in protecting US adults from pandemic-driven declines in employment-sponsored coverage, many people became uninsured during 2020
Travel time, availability of emergency obstetric care, and perceived quality of care associated with maternal healthcare utilisation in Afghanistan
Limited understanding of factors such as travel time, availability of emergency obstetric care (EmOC), and satisfaction/perceived quality of care on the utilisation of maternal health services exists in fragile and conflict-affect settings. We examined these key factors on three utilisation outcomes: at least one skilled antenatal care (ANC) visit, in-facility delivery, and bypassing the nearest public facility for childbirth in Afghanistan from …

Pilot implementation of a monitoring and enforcement system for the International Code of Marketing of Breast‐milk Substitutes in Cambodia
Globally, monitoring and enforcement mechanisms for the World Health Organization's International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes are often lacking. The Cambodian government adopted the Code as the national standard in Sub-Decree 133 on Marketing of Products for Infant and Young Child Feeding. Following the formation of a multisectoral Oversight Board and development of detailed guidance documents for the implementation and enforceme…
Inter-referencing Asian Canadian Studies
This paper proposes to use inter-Asian methodologies to reread Asian Canadian Studies. As an intellectual and political project, Asian Canadian Studies has largely been constituted through its responses to the Canadian nation-state and anti-racism alliances but has failed to seriously engage with Asia as a critical problematic. Informed by theories and practices of inter-referencing developed through Inter-Asia critique, we reconsider the specifi…
National and Global Decolonial Practices
This article puts local debates about settler colonialism and racialised migrants into dialogue with decoloniality with the hope of forging new critical approaches and making new political projects possible. I appeal to a global context in order to move beyond the impasse that has arisen on the national plane between settler colonialism studies which divides us into the homogenising categories of Indigenous and settler, and migrant studies which …

Surveying happiness in China
The objectives of this study are to investigate (1) whether subjective well-being (SWB) measures in surveys on China are interchangeable and (2) whether these measures work together as a construct. To accomplish these tasks, we examine SWB measures 1990–2016 for basic statistics, correlations between pairs of happiness terms within the same surveys, and test the internal consistency of five variables in the Blessed Happiness survey. Findings indi…
Colonial Plunder and the Failure of Restitution in Postwar Korea
This article evaluates the US ‘Monuments Men’ operations in Korea, focusing on wartime and postwar efforts undertaken by the government of the USA to preserve and restore artwork seized by Japan. The Asian initiative, conceived a year after the European model was established, likewise drew upon cultural, intellectual, and academic resources. Yet fundamental differences in personnel, perceptions of Korean cultural backwardness, prevailing imperial…
The Minor Intimacies of Race
An attempt to put an Asian woman on Canada's $100 bill in 2012 unleashed enormous controversy. The racism and xenophobia that answered this symbolic move toward inclusiveness revealed the nation's trumpeted commitment to multiculturalism as a lie. It also showed how multiple minor publics as well as the dominant public responded to the ongoing issue of race in Canada. This book delves into the ways cultural conversations minimize race's relevance…
An equity analysis of utilization of health services in Afghanistan using a national household survey
The large gap between the rich and poor in access to and utilization of key maternal services, such as institutional delivery, may be a central factor to the high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity and impedes efforts to make progress toward universal health coverage. While poorer households use public health services more often, the use of public facilities for outpatient visits remains half that of private facilities. Pro-poor targeting …
Fearful Asymmetry
The Smell of Communities to Come
In this article, I engage with the intense fascination with National Basketball Association (NBA) basketball star Jeremy Lin and read Linsanity (as it has been dubbed by the North American media) as a flashpoint for a complex set of racialised histories and discourses. The illegibility of Lin as an Asian American athlete raises provocative questions about how racial logics and representations tend to rely on the visual as a site and set of metaph…
Intimating Asias, Postcolonial Possibilities, and the Art of David Khang
This essay uses work by Vancouver-based artist David Khang to think about the complex formations of publics, particularly for racialized participants, and how we are able to feel for and within them. I route this discussion of postcolonial intimacies and the problem of ‘Asia’ as a site of alterity through these art projects because they speak to the geopolitics of feeling and the local and global structures that shape memory. Moreover, I see the …
Politics and Pageantry in Protectorate Korea (1905-10)
In the winter of 1909, at the height of Japan's informal rule in Korea, the protectorate government sent the Korean emperor Sunjong on an extended tour of the provinces. Applying the nation-building techniques of Meiji Japan, the residency-general had intended to promote unity and cooperation through the Korean royal house. Instead, the progresses sparked anti-Japanese nationalism and culminated in expressions of resistance. This article explores…
