  • Recurrent spectres

    Open Access•Ashwiny O Kistnareddy•ARTICLE•Children s Geographies•2026

Anonymous collages are evidence of the presence of children on the move who come through Calais daily. Secours Catholique keeps the vestiges of what I call their Derridean spectral absent presence next to the sketches of an artist volunteer who has also made portraits of some of these children who transit through. Through these sketches, I contend that the children are ‘living-on’, co-existing in the same space time as children who currently occu…

  • Ambivalent Encounters in Calais

    Open Access•Ashwiny O Kistnareddy•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural Studies•2024•References: 26

‘The term encounter has been used in various disciplines to indicate a bringing together of difference (people, groups, ideas, etc.) with an aim of some form of positive or beneficial outcome’ [Standish, K., 2021. Encounter Theory. Peacebuilding, 9 (1), 1–14.]. Allport [Allport, G.W., 1954. The Nature of Prejudice. Cambridge, MA: Perseus Books] suggests that contact between different groups might lead to a positive change and the reduction in ste…

    Ashwiny O Kistnareddy•ARTICLE•Quebec Studies•2021

Though Canada’s Multiculturalism Act (1971) enables migrants to enter the country and keep their values and cultures, in practice this can be a difficult process. This essay focuses on two narratives written by a Chinese Canadian immigrant, Ying Chen’s Lettres chinoises (1993), and a Vietnamese Québécois refugee, Kim Thúy’s Vi (2016), to highlight the ways in which immigrating into a new country can be a highly affective experience. Drawing on Ja…

  • Dire l’indicible

    Open Access•Ashwiny O Kistnareddy•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article articulates the notion of silences that endure in the aftermath of the Indochina war and the traumatic impact on children. Through an analysis of two Francophone texts, Grace Ly’s Jeune fille modèle and Kim Thúy’s Ru , this study demonstrates that it is silence which evokes and solidifies the trauma experienced by victims of war; this is transmitted to their children despite attempts at secrecy and endeavours to protect children from…

  • Le pays, c’était comme la femme d’un autre”

    Open Access•Ashwiny O Kistnareddy•ARTICLE•Itinéraires•2019

Fatou Diome and Léonora Miano, both born in Africa and living in France, are part of the growing number of diasporic West African writers seeking to transform the landscape of African literature. In this article, I will examine the emerging notions of masculinity in relation to West African migrants in Paris to gauge the extent to which the women writers are reconceptualising masculine identity, and thus debunking erstwhile notions of masculinity…

  • The twice-displaced

    Ashwiny O Kistnareddy•ARTICLE•South Asian Diaspora•2015

In an increasingly globalised world, it would be interesting to study the works of authors who are of South Indian origin, born and bred in Mauritius and then relocated in Europe. This double displacement would normally call into question the notion of identity and belonging, given the complexity of the concept of ‘home’. This essay deals with not only the authors’ own migration, but also their characters’ displacement to Europe/India which mirro…
