  • Urban Informatics

    Open Access•Yang Yue•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2026

Urban informatics uses data science techniques to model and analyze urban phenomena. Driven by the increasing availability of urban big data and advances in analytical tools, it seeks to address urban challenges such as transportation, environmental monitoring, and urban planning. The field relies heavily on geographic information science (GIS), spatial analysis, and machine learning. With emerging methods like generative artificial intelligence …

  • Embodied nursery rhyme teaching shows preliminary efficacy for preschoolers’ language aesthetic ability: A pilot mixed-methods study from China

    Open Access•Cai Xiaoying, X Q Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2026

Introduction Language aesthetic ability is central to early childhood arts education. However, traditional nursery-rhyme instruction in China often emphasizes rote recitation, neglecting the role of embodied experience. Grounded in embodied cognition theory, this study operationalizes embodied-cognition principles into a four-step teaching model and examines its impact on senior-kindergarteners’ language aesthetic development. Methods Using a seq…

  • Modeling digitally augmented Huff model: Evidence from Otaku culture–driven spatial interactions

Open Access•Jin Zeng, Jiaming Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2026

The digital era is reshaping how people engage with urban spaces; however, traditional spatial interaction models, such as the Huff model, have not reflected the growing importance of digital exposure in destination choices, which primarily emphasize attractiveness and travel costs in physical spaces. This study presents a digitally augmented Huff model that integrates digital metrics (such as follower count, like count, and post volume) to illus…

  • Hong Kong land development and policy intensity: Strategic embedding in a period of transition

F Yi, Hongfei Yu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian Public Policy•2026•References: 10

Hong Kong’s development has long relied on a land-based model serving both fiscal and governance roles, but this approach is now undergoing major changes amid institutional and economic transition. This study introduces a novel computational approach to analyse how the government’s land policy intensity has evolved amid shifting fiscal priorities and developmental strategies. Using manually labelled sentences from Policy Addresses between 1997 an…

Open Access•Yue Yang, Yang Yue et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2025

This study aims to explore the relationships between national identity, self-esteem, and subjective well-being among adolescents, with a particular focus on the mediating role of self-esteem between national identity and subjective well-being. A questionnaire survey conducted among 1,948 Chinese adolescents revealed significant positive correlations between national identity, self-esteem, and subjective well-being (p < 0.01). Gender, status, and …

  • Social attitudes toward Tongqi among the general public and associated determinants: A mixed-methods study in Hubei Province, China

Open Access•Fen Yang, Yufei Qiu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

The general public holds moderately neutral social attitudes toward Tongqi, influenced by multiple factors. Deep-rooted stigma, driven by conservative views on marriage and sexuality, continues to marginalize this group. Although emotional sympathy exists, the absence of public visibility and structural support limits meaningful social action. Future research should expand to diverse populations and sociocultural settings to inform targeted inter…

  • Mapping the Unmapped: Investigating Big Data Companies via Online Sources

Jiang Xu, Aidong Li et al.•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2023

Since the 2010s, big data has become a trendy term across government, business, and academia. There is a great deal of ambiguity in the definition of big data and the so-called big data sector it gives rise to. It is thus still debatable what companies can be considered big data firms. Studying such an emerging field and collecting firm-level data through surveys in understudied regions are particularly challenging due to the lack of an establish…

  • Coupling mobile phone and social media data: A new approach to understanding urban functions and diurnal patterns

Wei Tu, Jinzhou Cao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Understanding urban functions and their relationships with human activities has great implications for smart and sustainable urban development. In this study, we present a novel approach to uncovering urban functions by aggregating human activities inferred from mobile phone positioning and social media data. First, the homes and workplaces (of travelers) are estimated from mobile phone positioning data to annotate the activities conducted at the…

  • Measurements of POI-based mixed use and their relationships with neighbourhood vibrancy

Open Access•Yang Yue, Yan Zhuang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Although mixed use is an emerging strategy that has been widely accepted in urban planning for promoting neighbourhood vibrancy, there is no consensus on how to quantitatively measure the mix and the effects of mixed use on neighbourhood vibrancy. Shannon entropy, the most commonly used diversity measurement in assessing mixed use, has been found to be inadequate in measuring the multifaceted, multidimensional characteristics of mixed use. And la…

Open Access•Ying Zhou, Renzhe Xu et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Digital Health•2020

Background Restricting human mobility is an effective strategy used to control disease spread. However, whether mobility restriction is a proportional response to control the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is unclear. We aimed to develop a model that can quantify the potential effects of various intracity mobility restrictions on the spread of COVID-19. Methods In this modelling study, we used anonymous and aggregated mobile phone sightings data to bu…
