  • Two hands over two sands

    Dafydd Roberts•ARTICLE•Folk Life•2018

No sense of inter-Celtic harmony underpinned the Wales-wide campaign to set up a Welsh Methodist chapel on Talbot Street, Dublin, in 1838. Rather, it was the Welsh community’s determination to take on the Church of Rome, and to ensure that the Welsh diaspora in Dublin – many of them seamen serving on vessels making the short crossing to Holyhead – would be ministered to in their native language. Bethel chapel proved to be remarkably successful, w…

  • A Narrow Swathe of English Eccentricity

    Dafydd Roberts•ARTICLE•Folk Life•2011•References: 1

Since the 1950s, railways originally built to carry slate have evolved into heritage railways in north-west Wales. Enthusiastic volunteers were instrumental in this from the outset. Most of the volunteers were, though, not from Wales. This article explores aspects of the sometimes uneasy relationship between them, and those that live and work in the vicinity of railways which once serviced 'the most Welsh of Welsh industries'. The recent restorat…

  • Abypoth and Pennychain - Life in a Welsh Countryside

    Dafydd Roberts•ARTICLE•Folk Life•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Mindful of the fact that this article will be looking at two Welsh communities where religion — and Nonconformity in particular — was once overwhelmingly important, it seems relevant to set a context by quoting two verses from the Book of Leviticus 19.(33–34)·And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyselfBot…

  • Sheep Ear and Body Identification Marks in Wales

    Dafydd Roberts•ARTICLE•Folk Life•1981•References: 1

As the verse suggests, the collection of flock earmarks has long been recognized as essential, if a stray sheep is to be returned to its rightful owner. The antiquity in Wales of such a custom is difficult to assess, although it may be stated with some certainty that various earmarks, in a form similar to those currently in use, were to be seen during the first half of the nineteenth century. Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru asserts that the term clustn…
