Mindful of the fact that this article will be looking at two Welsh communities where religion — and Nonconformity in particular — was once overwhelmingly important, it seems relevant to set a context by quoting two verses from the Book of Leviticus 19.(33–34)·And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyselfBoth communities are on the western coast of Wales, on the shores of Cardigan Bay, that massive sweep of water leading from St Davids in the south to Ynys Enlli/Bardsey Island in the north. This is the bay which has been described, not infrequendy, by J. Geraint Jenkins in his books and articles as having a ‘long indented coastline’, and the two areas which will be discussed are located on indentations along that coastline
