Effects of Excerpt Duration, Tempo, and Performance Level on Musicians' Ratings of Wind Band Performances
This study investigated effects of listening example duration on the musical evaluation of wind band performances. In it, 96 music majors rated wind band performances that varied in performance level (high school, university, and professional), tempo (fast and slow), and duration (approximately 12, 25, and 50 seconds). Results showed no main effect for duration; however, there was a significant interaction between duration, tempo, and performance…
Examination of Relationships between Participation in School Music Programs of Differing Quality and Standardized Test Results
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship between participation in contrasting school music programs and standardized test scores. Effect of Rubato Magnitude on the Perception of Musicianship in Musical Performance
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of changing the magnitude of rubato in a musical performance on the perceived musicianship inherent in a music performance. Subjects listened six times to the first phrase of Bach's Suite Number 3 for Violoncello solo, Bourrée Number 1. Each performance of that phrase was altered such that the magnitude of the rubato was varied. The model performance was created from timings found in previous re…
Effect of Instruction in Appropriate Rubato Usage on the Onset Timings of Musicians in Performances of Bach
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of instruction in the use of specific rhythmic nuances on the timings of a musical performance. Volunteer subjects were asked to perform Bach's Suite no. 3 for Violoncello solo, Bouree no. 1, using a computer software program that controlled pitches, amplitude, and all other musical variables. The only aspect of the performance that the operator controlled was the rhythmic onset of each pitch. W…
Effect of Instruction in Appropriate Rubato Usage on the Onset Timings and Perceived Musicianship of Musical Performances
The purpose of this study was to investigate how instruction in the use of specific rhythmic nuances influences the performed timings of a musical performance. Volunteer participants were asked to learn and musically perform an excerpt from Mozart's Concerto for Horn and Orchestra, No. 2. They did this using computer software titled Instant Pleasure. As the title of the software implies, no prior musical training is required to perform a piece of…
The Effect of Positive Models of Inclusion on Band Students' Attitudinal Statements regarding the Integration of Students with Disabilities
