Covid-19 Behavioral Health Mindset Inventory
The COVID-19 Behavioral Health Mindset inventory (CVBHM) was designed to protect consumers and workers by assessing biosafety risk through acceptance of responsibility for the protection of oneself and others, social distancing, and adhering to prevention measures. The 30-item inventory was evaluated in two surveys of 1,455 (Time 1) and 431 respondents (Time 2). The CVBHM has strong internal consistency (T1 α = .90, T2 α = .88), test-retest relia…
The impact of health habits and life‐style on the stressor—strain relationship
Three industry populations representing a total of 58 organizations and more than 3000 individuals were surveyed to assess the influence of life‐style and health habits on stress outcomes. Results suggest a strong direct relationship between life‐style and health habits and stress outcomes. Contrary to hypotheses, life‐style and health habits did not consistently moderate, or ‘buffer’, the stressor‐strain linkage
A Multidimensional Approach for Selecting Child Care Workers
Differences between full‐time and part‐time employees in perceived role strain and work satisfaction
The Relationship between Intelligence, Honesty, and Theft Admissions
Paper-and-pencil integrity tests are used by thousands of companies to assess job applicants' propensity for on-the-job theft. One question that has been continually raised is whether there is a relationship between intelligence and integrity test scores. The present research is a summary of two independent studies of the London House Personnel Selection Inventory (PSI), an instrument designed to identify theft-prone applicants. Across both studi…
The Childcare Attitude Inventory
The purpose of this research note is to present preliminary norms and evidence of reliability and validity for the Childcare Attitude Inventory, a new research instrument being designed to identify adults who are emotionally capable of providing childcare of quality
The great war
These stereo cards are from the set ‘The Great War’, published by H. D. Girdwood, ca. 1917 The 200-card set, one of his ‘Realistic Travels’ series, covered the 1914/16 period of the war, and most of them authentically show troop mobilization and movement, the effects of bombardments, parades, etc. However, during these years, photography at the actual battle fronts was subject to severe censorship and control, and so approximately fifty of the ca…
Predicting Patients' Withdrawal against Medical Advice from an Alcoholism Treatment Center
34 male street alcoholics completed the Drinking-related Locus of Control Scale before entering a 30-day residential treatment program for alcoholism. Their locus of control scores significantly correlated .36 with the number of days they remained in treatment. Patients reporting more perceived control over both interpersonal and intrapersonal pressures to drink (internal scorers) remained in treatment reliably longer than patients (external) who…
Predicting Employees' Theft in Home Improvement Centers
An 8-mo. predictive validity study in 8 home improvement centers showed that 86 employees' attitudes and cognitions toward theft reliably predicted future theft and counterproductivity. Employees with dishonest attitudes and cognitions toward theft, as measured by the Personnel Selection Inventory, were rated by store managers as having committed significantly more counterproductive acts during the 8-mo. period than employees with more honest att…
Psychological Factors Related to Employees' Theft in the Convenience Store Industry
Four studies are presented that examine various aspects of theft in the convenience store industry. Study 1 was a survey of both managers' ( n = 24) and retail clerks' ( n = 54) opinions on how and why convenience store employees steal. Results showed that the most frequently used theft techniques involved various ways of stealing cash from a register. Major reasons for employees' theft included financial need, low wages, revenge, and thrill-seek…
Drinking-Related Control Orientation and Alcohol Intoxication
Significant negative correlations (—.60, —28, —.36) were found between Drinking-related Locus of Control scores and semiannual intoxication rates in three different samples totalling 177 subjects. Persons reporting more perceived control over both intrapersonal and interpersonal pressures to drink (internal scorers) became reliably less intoxicated from alcohol during a 6-mo. period than people reporting less control (external scorers)
Attitudinal Correlates of Employees' Deviance
Employees' on-the-job theft, alcohol use, and nonprescribed drug use cost businesses billions of dollars yearly due to shrinkage, lowered productivity, absenteeism, law suits related to accidents, etc. Sampling 39 employees from three different workplaces, statistically significant relationships between attitudes toward socially unacceptable deviant behavior, as measured by the Personnel Security Inventory, and employee on-the-job behavior in the…
School transitions
Entering a new school represents a critical developmental transition, since children need to overcome apprehension of peer rejection and difficulties in ascertaining new school policies. The present study investigated a peer-led preventive orientation program which was aimed at allaying detrimental effects of a forced school closing. Students transferring into a public elementary school were matched by grade and sex with students currently enroll…
Acquisitional Processes Underlying Illicit Alcohol Abuse in Underage Children
This study examined 25 boys and 35 girls in an elementary school and found illicit alcohol use occurred in 1 out of 5. Moreover, the frequency of weekly alcohol consumption among both the students' families and friends, as observed by the student, reliably predicted alcohol consumption rates by male students but not females. The obtained pattern of results is discussed in terms of an observational learning model of youths' drinking behavior, and …
Air Pollution and Human Aggression
Investigating the effect of irritant air pollution upon human aggression, it was found that exposure to secondary cigarette smoke significantly increased aggression in both angered and nonangered subjects compared to their counterparts given clean air
Free Fatty Acid Mobilization During Suggestion of Exercise and Stress Using Hypnosis and Sodium Amytal
Experiments were carried out to determine the effect of the reexperiencing of exercise and emotionally charged situations using strong suggestion under hypnosis and with intravenous sodium amytal on circulating FFA and other physiological variables. During hypnosis four of the six subjects readily relived past experiences of strenuous exercise and had significant increases in arterial FFA levels, and three showed rises in heart rate. In three of …

Some lessons a teachers college dean has learned from the war
problems that develop in college towns near service camps are not present on our campus; the problems that have come to my desk are those which are the result of the pressure of war upon the lives of college students. The lessons these problems have taught me have developed from the problems of these young people, together with those problems that have resulted in the life of the college as a teacher education institution made up of faculty, stud…
The laboratory school in a teacher‐education program
What should be the organization and function of a laboratory school in a teacher-education program? Articles written in recent years describing the facilities provided by teacher-education institutions, which were developed for the purpose of improving the quality of the institutional product-the teacher-have been many and varied. Almost every one now engaged in the task of preparing teachers is at work in an institution where a traditional organ…
