School Renewal and School Well-Being
In this longitudinal case study, we examined school well-being during the change process. We operationalized the change process as the school renewal model and viewed school well-being from the perspective of the PERMA (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment) model. We found that all elements of the PERMA model were manifested in the school renewal process and that the school renewal process was not dominated sol…
Teacher Evaluation as a Data-Use Intervention
This multi-site ethnographic study focuses on the utility of using student growth data generated from teacher evaluations as a data-use intervention. Findings suggest that teachers developed a common perspective about evaluation but organizational contexts shaped teacher responses at the three sites differently. At two of the schools, teachers were responsible for administering their own assessments, organizing results, and presenting these resul…
A large-scale study of how districts’ curriculum policies and practices shape teachers’ mathematics lesson planning
Early career teachers (ECTs) face unprecedented pressure to fulfill expectations of ‘highly effective’ teachers within their first few years of teaching. Lesson planning is an important precursor to effective instruction, yet little is known about how the social and institutional contexts where ECTs work influences their planning. In this paper, we report findings from a large-scale study of elementary ECTs’ mathematics lesson planning practice t…

Self-Efficacy, Self-Esteem and Their Impact on Academic Performance
This study investigated relationships between self-efficacy, self-esteem, previous performance accomplishments, and academic performance among a sample of 205 postgraduate students. Each student's average grade from modules studied was used as the performance measure. Correlation results indicated significant relat…

Predictive Validity of Variables used to Select Students for Postgraduate Management Courses
The present study set in the United Kingdom examined the predictive validity of variables used to select graduate students into postgraduate management programs at a UK business school. 303 postgraduate students completed a cognitive ability test (MD5, Mental Ability Test), a questionnaire to assess perceptions of self-efficacy to succeed on the program, and reported their performance on their first (undergraduate) degree. Students completed thes…
Self-Efficacy and Academic Performance
The aim of the present study was to examine the predictive effectiveness of self-efficacy in an academic setting. Seventy-six postgraduate students completed a questionnaire to assess efficacy expectations toward competencies perceived to underpin performance on the course. As there was a 13-week difference in time between completing the self-efficacy questionnaire and completing the performance criterion, it was considered important to assess th…

The operation of the single transferable vote in Malta challenges conventional wisdom about the political effects of the system
The election of women under proportional representation
It has often been noted that women's opportunities for a legislative career are enhanced in countries using proportional representation. But in Malta, which uses a variant of proportional representation, there are fewer women in parliament than in any other Western democracy. A detailed analysis of voting data shows that what accounts for the paucity of women legislators in Malta is not a shortage of ballot positions; nor a lack of qualified wome…
Self‐ratings, supervisor ratings, positions and performance
Self‐ratings and supervisor ratings were obtained for 40 unit managers. Self‐ratings were predicted by length of service, whereas supervisor ratings were also predicted by previous appraisal ratings, performance, and career progression. Both self‐ratings and supervisor ratings predicted subsequent performance in the form of unit admissions and gross profit. The predictive power of self‐ratings was explained in terms of the interactive theory of s…
