  • Using community-based participatory action research to create culturally grounded education at scale: A study of systems change in Peru

Joseph Levitan, Kayla M Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Action Research•2026

In this article, we share the process of a long-term community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) project working with Quechua communities in Peru to co-create culturally grounded curriculum materials. We show how policy advocacy, collaboration between Indigenous communities, governments, and social organizations can work to systematically address long-standing social justice issues in education. The project, which has been running since…

  • Contextualizing E-Learning Experiences With Indigenous Communities: A Practical, Research-Based Approach

Open Access•Joseph Levitan, Jessica Perez et al.•ARTICLE•The International Review of…•2025

During the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 300,000 students in Peru dropped out of the school system. Most of the students were rural Indigenous students. A lack of infrastructure and connectivity, as well as a lack of contextualized and appropriate educational resources, made it virtually impossible for rural students to engage in formal learning. The pandemic has made clear the need and viability for distributed e-learning in rural communities. Ho…

Open Access•Lourdes López, Juan Pablo del Alcázar Ponce et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Posthumanism•2025

This essay presents a theoretical-methodological framework for the qualitative study of digital communities through an articulation of netnography, discourse analysis (DA), and, optionally, social network analysis (SNA). Grounded in the epistemological principles of critical realism, this approach enables the examination not only of observable practices but also of the discursive structures and underlying generative mechanisms shaping meaning in …

  • The Labor Market Effects of Immigration Enforcement

Chloe N East, Annie Laurie Hines et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2023

We examine the labor market effects of Secure Communities (SC), a police-based immigration enforcement policy implemented in 2008–13. Using variation in implementation across local areas and over time, we find that SC decreased the employment of likely undocumented immigrants. These effects are driven not only by deportations but also by adjustments among immigrants who remain in the United States. Importantly, SC also decreased the employment an…

  • Impact of Violent Crime on Risk Aversion: Evidence from the Mexican Drug War

Open Access•Ryan Brown, Verónica Montalva et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2019

Whereas attitudes toward risk play an important role in many decisions over the life course, factors that affect those attitudes are not fully understood. Using longitudinal survey data collected in Mexico before and during the Mexican war on drugs, we investigate how risk attitudes change with variation in insecurity and uncertainty brought on by unprecedented changes in local-area violent crime. Exploiting the fact that the timing, virulence, a…

Para conocer las competencias mediáticas en escuelas, colegios y universidades de Ecuador diversas universidades ecuatorianas han emprendido una serie de investigacio…

  • Identifying Victims of Civil Conflicts: An Evaluation of Forced Displaced Households in Colombia

    Open Access•Ana María Ibáñez, Andrea Velásquez•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2009•Cited by: 10•References: 4

Given that forced migration subjects households to extremely vulnerable conditions, the need to design particular policies for displaced populations is unquestionable. However, forced displacement poses several challenges to policymakers. In connection with low-intensity conflicts, such as in the case of Colombia, the main obstacle concerns the identification of households' victims of forced migration, so as to know to whom one should funnel aid.…
