  • Varying Perceptions of Tesol Instruction from Experts, Peers, and Learners

    Open Access•Kylie Woffinden, K H Woffinden et al.•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•2026•References: 49

This study investigates the comparative value of feedback provided by expert teachers, peer teachers, and language learners within TESOL practicum settings. Drawing on data from 738 feedback comments on two video‐recorded lessons, the research explores variations in the quantity, type, tone, and evaluative content of feedback among the three groups. Results indicate that expert teachers gave the most extensive and pedagogically grounded feedback,…

  • Clinical supervision in medical education

    Matthew J Baker, Lauren A Maggio et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2024

Purpose Medical education relies on clinical supervision for critical functions, including trainee assessment and ensuring patient safety. Yet, there is substantial variance in supervision, which has led to calls for a shared definition of the concept and guidelines to inform practice. AMEE Guide No. 27 provided these desired elements and is highly cited, suggesting that translation and utilization of the Guide’s knowledge is suboptimal. This stu…

  • Was Civil War surgery effective

    Matthew J Baker•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2018•References: 8

During the U.S. Civil War surgeons performed a vast number of surgeries. Whether surgery increased wounded soldiers’ chances of survival has been debated ever since. I analyze a unique observational data set gathered by Dr. Edmund Andrews, a surgeon with the 1st Illinois Light Artillery. I use Dr. Andrews’s data, model selection tools, and doubly robust estimation methods to estimate treatment effects from surgery. I find that surgery increased w…

  • Job Hoarding

Matthew J Baker, Ingmar Nyman•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2017

We study a labor market in which employers and workers search for a trading partner, and workers have private information about the value of a match. We show that competitive pressure can induce workers to take jobs for which they are ill suited. This leads to insufficient frictional unemployment and search, and lower average productivity and utility. A fully tax-financed unemployment benefit can eliminate the inefficiency. Moreover, because inef…

  • Psychological type differences between churchgoers and church-leavers

    Matthew J Baker•ARTICLE•Mental Health Religion & Culture•2015

Differences in psychological type were examined among three samples taken from the online Personality and Belief in God Survey. All three samples consisted of individuals who grew up attending church as a child. The first sample was made up of 2326 individuals who continue to attend church as adults (1137 females and 1189 males), the second was made up of 10,515 individuals who no longer attend church and are now atheists or agnostics (2677 femal…

  • Assessment, evaluations, and definitions of research impact

    Open Access•Teresa Penfield, Matthew J Baker et al.•ARTICLE•Research Evaluation•2014

This article aims to explore what is understood by the term ‘research impact’ and to provide a comprehensive assimilation of available literature and information, drawing on global experiences to understand the potential for methods and frameworks of impact assessment being implemented for UK impact assessment. We take a more focused look at the impact component of the UK Research Excellence Framework taking place in 2014 and some of the challeng…

  • American on-line atheists and psychological type

    Matthew J Baker, M Robbins•ARTICLE•Mental Health Religion & Culture•2012

A sample of 10,627 American atheists (7763 males and 2864 females) completed the Francis Psychological-Type Scales as part of the Personality and Belief in God Survey on-line. Compared with USA population norms, both male and female atheists displayed significantly higher levels of preference for introversion, thinking, and judging. The two predominant types among female atheists were ISTJ (40.8%) and INTJ (11.7%), compared with 6.9% and 0.8% res…

  • An Equilibrium Conflict Model of Land Tenure in Hunter‐Gatherer Societies

    Matthew J Baker•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2003•Cited by: 19•References: 11

I apply features of the economics of conflict and spatial competition in developing a model of the emergence of land ownership in hunter-gatherer societies. Tenure regimes are the result of interactions between those seeking to defend claims to land and those seeking to infringe on those claims. The model highlights the dependence of land ownership on ecological parameters, such as resource density and predictability, and allows for situational o…
