Tom Stoppard's Leopoldstadt and Its Discontents
Tom Stoppard's Leopoldstadt and Its Discontents Martin Schneider Late last year I attended the New York production of Tom Stoppard's latest play, Leopoldstadt, at the Longacre Theatre. The play's original run was in London's West End in early 2020 before being interrupted by COVID. It is said that it will be the final play of his storied career. I have been the copyeditor of The Journal of Austrian Studies for more than 10 years and am the descen…
Impact of the Covid‐19 pandemic on rural and urban cancer patients' experiences, health behaviors, and perceptions
PURPOSE: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted many facets of life. We evaluated pandemic-related health care experiences, COVID-19 prevention behaviors and measures, health behaviors, and psychosocial outcomes among rural and urban cancer patients. METHODS: Among 1,472 adult cancer patients, who visited Huntsman Cancer Institute in the past 4 years and completed a COVID-19 survey (August-September 2020), we assessed the impact of the pandemic on m…
The DaimlerChrysler takeover failure revisited from a varieties-of-capitalism perspective
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to revisit the disastrous DaimlerChrysler AG takeover episode from 1998 to 2007 in order to arrive at a more comprehensive explanation of this and other merger and takeover failures based on institutional theory. Design/methodology/approach The case study is based on various secondary sources of information and on the insights that one of the authors gained from working for 14 years in various positions for Da…
What Do Unions Do to Work Design? Computer Use, Union Presence, and Tayloristic Jobs in Britain
The task framework has focused on employee survey data to analyze how computer use changes the content of jobs. In this article, we add another factor of work design, namely trade union presence. Using data from the UK Skills and Employment Surveys for the period 1997–2012, we find that union presence is associated with more Tayloristic jobs involving less autonomy, lower relevance of problem solving, and more control. In line with theory, the un…

Slow to Hire, Quick to Fire: Employment Dynamics with Asymmetric Responses to News
Concave hiring rules imply that firms respond more to bad shocks than to good shocks. They provide a unified explanation for several seemingly unrelated facts about employment growth in macro- and microdata. In particular, they generate countercyclical movement in both aggregate conditional “macro” volatility and cross-sectional “micro” volatility, as well as negative skewness in the cross section and in the time series at different levels of agg…

Within many practical, professional and political fields, resilience has become a normati…

A matter of degree: The continuing training gap for women in Europe
We analyse the gender training gap (i.e. the disadvantage of women in receiving work-related continuing training) based on individual data from the first wave of the Adult Education Survey (AES). The interaction of gender and education, we argue, has been overlooked in previous work. For only one of 22 European countries do we find a statistically significant training gap for women with a university degree—but in six countries, we find a statisti…
Changing varieties of capitalism and revealed comparative advantages from 1990 to 2005: A test of the Hall and Soskice claims
In this paper, the varieties of capitalism (VoC) approach by Hall and Soskice (2001) is tested with longitudinal data and with measures covering all four institutional spheres differentiated in this approach. Among 26 OECD countries, we find various institutional configurations including a group of liberal market economies (LMEs) and of coordinated market economies (CMEs). However, these configurations are not stable. From 1990 to 2005, Denmark, …
Expatriate compensation packages: What do employees prefer
Purpose Heterogeneous employee preferences may encumber employers' attempts to standardize expatriate compensation packages. The purpose of this paper is to outline an empirical approach that informs employers about their employees' preferences concerning an international assignment. Design/methodology/approach Utility theory and conjoint measurement techniques are applied. Employees, it is argued, derive utility from the multiple characteristics…
Characteristics of Innovation and Innovation Adoption in Public Organizations: Assessing the Role of Managers
Studies of the association between innovation characteristics and innovation adoption at the level of organization are scarce. This study develops direct and moderating hypotheses for the relationship between innovation characteristics, manager characteristics, and innovation adoption in public organizations. The hypotheses are tested using survey data on the adoption of 25 innovations in 725 local governments in the United States and data from a…

Die Elektrizität im Weltbild Johann Gottlob Krügers
The electricity within the world view of Johann Gottlob Krüger. – In the 18th century, the physician Johann Gottlob Krüger (1715–1759) was among the first German scientists, who contributed to the new field of electricity. Based on a pietist background, he developed a natural theology, in which every part of nature was regarded as useful because of the wisdom of god, who wanted to be recognized by man through his creation. The following essay pre…
Inflation and the Redistribution of Nominal Wealth
This study quantitatively assesses the effects of inflation through changes in the value of nominal assets. It documents nominal asset positions in the United States across sectors and groups of households and estimates the wealth redistribution caused by a moderate inflation episode. The main losers from inflation are rich, old households, the major bondholders in the economy. The main winners are young, middle-class households with fixed-rate m…
Performance Management by Culture in the National Labor Relations Board's Division of Judges and the German Labor Courts of Appeal
Professional judges receive a fixed salary and are largely exempt from effective sanctions. How can management induce judges to perform well in their professional roles? Judges share work-related norms and values, derive status from their standing within the professional community, and are susceptible to peer review. Therefore, performance management may be perceived as maintaining and directing organizational culture, as is illustrated empirical…

Postmeister und Stationsaufseher: Eine Studie zur deutschen Puskin-Rezeption
The study will be published on the 160th anniversary of the death of Aleksandr Puškin and in the run-up to the big jubilee in 1999. Its purpose is to shed light on a chapter in German-Russian cultural history and to point out the connecting and the dividing. \n
Bias in meta-analysis detected by a simple, graphical test
Objective: Funnel plots (plots of effect estimates against sample size) may be useful to detect bias in meta-analyses that were later contradicted by large trials. We examined whether a simple test of asymmetry of funnel plots predicts discordance of results when meta-analyses are compared to large trials, and we assessed the prevalence of bias in published meta-analyses. Design: Medline search to identify pairs consisting of a meta-analysis and …
