  • Antipsychotic Prescribing

    Timothy S Anderson, Haiden A Huskamp et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2015•References: 26

BACKGROUND: Academic medical centers (AMCs) have increasingly adopted conflict of interest policies governing physician-industry relationships; it is unclear how policies impact prescribing. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether 9 American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC)-recommended policies influence psychiatrists' antipsychotic prescribing and compare prescribing between academic and nonacademic psychiatrists. RESEARCH DESIGN: We measured num…

  • Pricing in the Market for Anticancer Drugs

    Open Access•David H Howard, Peter B Bach et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 39

In 2011, Bristol-Myers Squibb set the price of its newly approved melanoma drug ipilimumab-brand name Yervoy-at $120,000 for a course of therapy. The drug was associated with an incremental increase in life expectancy of four months. Drugs like ipilimumab have fueled the perception that the launch prices of new anticancer drugs and other drugs in the so-called "specialty" pharmaceutical market have been increasing over time and that increases are…

  • The Impact of Emerging Safety and Effectiveness Evidence on the Use of Physician-administered Drugs

    Rena M Conti, Stacie B Dusetzina et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2013•References: 4

BACKGROUND: Spending on physician-administered drugs is high and uses not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are frequent. Although these drugs may be targets of future policy efforts to rationalize use, little is known regarding how physicians respond to emerging safety and effectiveness evidence. STUDY OBJECTIVE: We analyzed changes in bevacizumab (Avastin) use for breast cancer in response to its market launch (February 2008…

  • Effects of Pharmaceutical Promotion on Adherence to the Treatment Guidelines for Depression

    Julie M Donohue, Ernst R Berndt et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2004•References: 29

OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine the impact of direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) and pharmaceutical promotion to physicians on the likelihood that (1) an individual diagnosed with depression received antidepressant medication and that (2) antidepressant medication was used for the appropriate duration. RESEARCH DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: A quasiexperimental design was used to examine treatment patterns of 30,621 depressed individuals whose insuranc…

  • Relationship of Employee-Reported Work Limitations to Work Productivity

    Debra Lerner, Benjamin C Amick et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2003•References: 10

BACKGROUND: Work limitation rates are crucial indicators of the health status of working people. If related to work productivity, work limitation rates may also supply important information about the economic burden of illness. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess the productivity impact of on-the-job work limitations due to employees' physical or mental health problems. RESEARCH DESIGN: Subjects were asked to complete a self-administered surve…

  • Pharmaceuticals in U.S. Health Care

    Open Access•Ernst R Berndt•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2002

The U.S. pharmaceutical industry has again become the focus of considerable controversy. In understanding the economics underlying this industry, distinctions between short, medium and long-run costs are critical, as is that between economic and accounting costs. Consumers' heterogeneous valuations create strong incentives for non-uniform pricing and targeted marketing. The conflict between static efficiency (price new drugs low, near short-run m…

  • Auditing the Producer Price Index

Ernst R Berndt, Zvi Griliches et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1993

From January 1984 through December 1989, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) price index for prescription pharmaceuticals grew at 9.09% per year. Using BLS-type Laspeyres index procedures with monthly price and quantity data on all prescription pharmaceuticals sold by four U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturers accounting for 24% of industry domestic sales, we find that the four-company index increases at 6.68% per year. When we employ a Divisia pric…

  • Energy demand in the transportation sector of Mexico

    Open Access•Ernst R Berndt, German Botero•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•1985•References: 1

  • Parametric Productivity Measurement and Choice Among Flexible Functional Forms

Ernst R Berndt, Mohammed Khaled et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1979•Cited by: 13

This paper formulates and estimates a model of producer behavior for U.S. manufacturing 1947-71 that simultaneously identifies substitution elasticities, scale economies, and the rate and bias of technical change. A nonhomothetic, nonneutral generalized Box-Cox cost function is employed which takes on the generalized Leontief, generalized square-root quadratic, and translog cost functions as special or limiting cases. Total factor productivity is…

  • British Columbia's Energy Outlook 1976-1991

    Ernst R Berndt•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•1978

  • Reconciling Alternative Estimates of the Elasticity of Substitution

    Ernst R Berndt•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1976

A large number of econometric studies have focused on possibilities for capital-labor in U.S. manufacturing. The evidence, however, indicates substantial disagreement over value of of (cr). Studies based on cross-sectional data provide estimates which are quite close to unity, but time series studies generally report lower estimates. Furthermore, estimates of or seem to vary systematically with choice of functional form: regressions based on marg…

  • Technology, Prices, and the Derived Demand for Energy

Ernst R Berndt, David O Wood•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1975

Industrial demand for energy is essentially a derived demand: the firm's demand for energy is an input is derived from demand for the firm's output. Inputs other than energy typically also enter the firm's production process. Since firms tend to choose that bundle of inputs which minimized the total cost of producing a giving level of output, the derived demand for inputs, including energy, depends on the level of output, the submitions possibili…
