  • Staystrongmelbs

    Kerry Mullan•ARTICLE•Punctum International Journal of…•2025

Humor is widely recognized as a way to process and deal with disasters and tragic events. This is particularly the case in our digital age: political controversies, wars, natural disasters, and other crises, such as COVID-19, often lead to the rapid proliferation of creative and amusing memes as a digital response mechanism, creating a sense of community and levity and an outlet for anxiety and frustration in participatory digital cultures. While…

  • Community languages teachers’ funds of knowledge

    J Qi, Kerry Mullan•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Community languages (CL) schools have grown rapidly to accommodate an increasing number of learners globally. However, teacher development for CL schools remains under-researched, and a deficit view of the CL teachers continues to dominate. Contextualised in Victoria Australia, and theoretically driven by the concept of funds of knowledge, this study explores how CL teachers’ everyday life and work practices might constitute sources of knowledge …

  • Rééquilibrage ? A Geo-Semiotic Analysis of Noumea’s Main City Square as Case Study

DIANE ST LEGER, Kerry Mullan•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of French…•2023

The notions of rééquilibrage and destin commun are central to the Matignon and Noumea Accords, which aimed to achieve self-determination for New Caledonia. The preamble of the Noumea accord recognizes that colonization stripped the Kanak peoples of their languages, culture and identity. As a result, various programs were launched to reinstate their memory and cultural patrimony. These were predominantly established in the Province Nord, while in …

This study examines the use of online humour in a subversive local community Facebook group set up in 2017 by disgruntled members banned from a similar group “in opposition to [the original group’s] arbitrarily-applied rules, [its] enforced happiness, and [its] suppression of any post that isn't about giving away lemons or asking to borrow small appliances”. The dissatisfaction with the guidelines and the administration of the original Facebook g…

  • Cohesive Diverse Suburbs in Australia

Karien Dekker, Kerry Mullan•ARTICLE•Urban Policy and Research•2021

Melbourne’s population is culturally superdiverse yet there is little focus on inclusiveness in diverse communities. C Goddard, Kerry Mullan•ARTICLE•Humor - International Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 6

This study undertakes a contrastive lexical-semantic analysis of a set of related verbs in English and French (English to joke and to kid , French rigoler and plaisanter ), using the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach to semantic analysis. We show that the semantic and conceptual differences between French and English are greater than commonly assumed. These differences, we argue, have significant implications for humor studies: first, …
