Navigating Conflicting Health Advice Amid Scientific Updates: Effects of Proactive Versus Reactive Messaging Strategies, Source Difference, and Open-Mindedness
600) examined the effectiveness of communication strategies for presenting such conflicting recommendations, specifically proactive versus reactive messaging and source difference, in shaping message and source responses and, subsequently, behavioral intentions toward the updated recommendation. Results revealed that a proactive strategy preemptively acknowledging the possibility of future change preserved responses to the initial recommendation …
Responses to Position-Disconfirming Meta-Advice in the Context of Conflicting Vs. Consistent Co-Presenting Messages: The Role of Reactance and Perceived Norms
Advice is a vital form of interpersonal influence, and some advice concerns advising others (i.e., meta-advice). In today’s competitive information environment, individuals often encounter both recommendations that support their stance and those that challenge it. Drawing on psychological reactance and normative influence theories, this study examines how people respond to position-disconfirming meta-advice when it is presented in different messa…
Persistence of Misinformation: Biased Cognitive Processing and Polarization
Misinformation can be broadly defined as information that is inaccurate or false according to the best available evidence, or information whose validity cannot be verified. It is created and spread with or without clear intent to cause harm. There is well-documented evidence that misinformation persists despite fact-checking and the presentation of corrective information, often traveling faster and deeper than facts in the online environment. Dra…
On the interdependence of conflicting advice messages: An extension of advice response theory
Despite the common occurrence of conflicting recommendations, research on advice has largely focused on understanding responses to isolated advice messages. To address this gap, this study extends Advice Response Theory (ART) by testing an interdependence model of responses to conflicting advice. We observed both within- and cross-message mediating effects of message evaluation. Specifically, perceived advisor characteristics of a given advice me…
The Persuasive Impact of Narrative Richness in Antibiotic Stewardship Communication: The Roles of Emotions, Psychological Distance, and Self-Referencing
This study examines how narrative richness—defined as detail and elaboration in characters, plot, and context—shapes persuasive outcomes in antibiotic stewardship messaging. In a single-factor experiment ( N = 1,264), compared to lean narratives or statistics, rich narratives most effectively elicited fear through heightened transportation, although they did not outperform lean narratives in evoking guilt. Fear increased risk perception through r…
Associations between interactions with support providers and depression during times of isolation: Integrating perceived support and media multiplexity
Integrating aspects of social interaction and communicating via technology, this study examines perceived support as a mechanism through which frequent interactions with support providers are linked to depression. Building off of Taylor and Bazarova’s (2018) developments to media multiplexity theory, it also theorizes and tests the moderating effect of multiple forms of media multiplexity, including average multiplexity, overall multiplexity, and…

Understanding Responses to Conflicting Advice on Covid-19
This survey study tested a two-level model of responses to conflicting advice about COVID-19 and examined the underlying emotional and cognitive mechanisms and the moderating role of advice source. Results showed that at the individual message level, advice evaluation was associated with advice outcomes. At the message group level, advice evaluation and outcomes were linked to perceived contradiction in content among the advice and the quantity o…
What Does Patient-Centered Communication Look Like: Linguistic Markers of Provider Compassionate Care and Shared Decision-Making and Their Impacts on Patient Outcomes
Patient-centered communication promotes positive patient outcomes. This study examines the linguistic markers of two key dimensions of patient-centered communication (i.e., provider compassionate care and shared decision-making) and their mediating effects on patient perceived quality of and affective responses to the provider’s treatment recommendations. Transcripts (N = 343) of provider talk from provider-patient interactions in medical visits …
Language use in online support provision: The impact of others’ supportive messages, support-seeking strategy, and channel publicness
People benefit from high-quality supportive messages online, yet the production of these messages is a complex process that is shaped by multiple factors. As informed by the lens model, this study seeks to investigate the interplay of third party’s supportive messages as a form of behavioral residue and the support seeker’s seeking strategy as an identity claim on providers’ language use in supportive messages conveyed in public and private chann…
Confirmation Bias and the Persistence of Misinformation on Climate Change
A web-based two (preexisting position: correct vs. incorrect) by two (message type: scientific information vs. misinformation) by three (messages) mixed design experimental study was conducted to test confirmation bias as a mechanism underlying the persistence of misinformation on climate change and to examine attitude certainty as a moderator of confirmation bias. Data collected with Qualtrics panels demonstrated robust confirmation bias in mess…
Epistemic Egocentrism and Processing of Vaccine Misinformation (Vis-à-vis Scientific Evidence): The Case of Vaccine-Autism Link
A web-based 2 (preexisting position: vaccine-inclined vs. -hesitant) by 2 (message type: scientific evidence vs. misinformation) experimental study was conducted to investigate individuals’ processing of misinformation (vis-à-vis scientific evidence) on the vaccine-autism link within the framework of epistemic egocentrism. Data (N = 996) collected with Qualtrics panel demonstrated that preexisting position shaped individuals’ responses to vaccine…
Mental Health and Its Predictors during the Early Months of the Covid-19 Pandemic Experience in the United States
To date, there has been relatively little published research on the mental health impacts of COVID-19 for the general public at the beginning of the U.S.' experience of the pandemic, or the factors associated with stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic growth during this time. The current study provides a longitudinal examination of the predictors of self-reported stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic growth for U.S. residents …
Increasing Information Seeking About Antibiotic Risks: Testing a Clinical Intervention Message Using the Risk Information Seeking and Processing Model
We employed the risk information seeking and processing (RISP) model to inform the design of antibiotic stewardship messages aiming at influencing intentions to seek or avoid antibiotic risk information. College-age respondents ( N = 400) from a national sample viewed one of three versions of a RISP-informed message or no message (control group). Relative to the control group, all RISP-informed messages increased perceptions of information insuff…
Health Providers' Advising on Symptom Management for Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: Does Elaboration of Reasoning Influence Outcomes Relevant to Antibiotic Stewardship
Antibiotic-resistant infections, fueled by unwarranted antibiotic prescribing, are an increasing threat to public health. Reducing overprescribing and promoting antibiotic stewardship requires managing patient expectations for and understanding about the utility of antibiotics. One hotspot for overprescribing is upper respiratory tract infections, for which the best treatment is often non-antibiotic symptom management behaviors. Guided by advice …
