Mothering a Bodied Curriculum
A bodied curriculum attends to the relational, social, and ethical implications of "being-with" other bodies differently and to the different knowledges such bodily encounters produce. It is a practice of being oriented to others, to touch, to reflect, and to dwell with others relationally. In this paper we re-conceptualize m/othering as a bodied curriculum opening up maternity to the in-between of corporeality, materiality, and difference. In do…

It's my way or the highway
In this paper we explore dichotomies that exist between/within/through the (re)presentations of students and teachers found in the television shows Dangerous Minds and Boston Public. These dichotomized relationships engender a school culture organized by and through either/or conditions. More specifically, these dichotomized relationships force students and teachers into specific positions of inclusion and/or exclusion (i.e., It's my way or the h…
Challenges Enacting Caring Teacher Education
To prepare teachers who will be able to draw on caring to build a strong foundation for their professional practices, teacher education programs must be created specifically focused toward this goal. This article discusses the use of dialogue journals in a course designed to enrich preservice elementary teachers' understandings of caring. Quite unexpectedly, the dialogue journals demonstrated some of the preservice teachers developing negative, j…
Acceptance and Alignment, Misconception and Inexperience
The author of this article examines student representations within the Dangerous Minds television series and further explores how preservice teachers perceive these representations. Applying a multiperspectival analysis, the author first looks at the political culture: the history behind the making of the Dangerous Minds television series. She then analyzes five specific episodes of the television series that embody the themes found within this f…
The Role of Effective Mentors in Learning to Teach
I have felt like a student ... because [Mary] is teaching me so many things and so sometimes we're in that role. But it's not me sitting on the other side of the desk. It's kind of like sitting beside her being a student. And, I have felt like we're colleagues when we share, particularly when we work with literature. ... We were able to feed off each other. It wasn't me so much learning, I mean I was learning, we were learning from each other. A …
Caregiving in the close relationships of cardiac patients
Individuals with a cardiac condition and their spousal caregivers were recruited from cardiac rehabilitation centers and interviewed separately. Based on exchange theory, it was expected that greater caregiver resentment would be associated with feeling underbenefited in the relationship and with an orientation to relationships that did not focus on the needs of the partner (communal), but did focus on “tit‐for‐tat” reciprocity (exchange). It was…
