  • Time

Nancy Van Deusen, Leonard Michael Koff•BOOK•Time: Sense, Space, Structure•2016

"The essays in this volume explore the nature of time, our God-given medium of ascent, known, as Augustine puts it, through the ordered study of the 'liberal disciplines that carry the mind to the divine (disciplinae liberales intellectum efferunt ad divina)': grammar and dialectic, e.g., to promote thinking; geometry and astronomy to grasp the dimensions of our reality; music, an invisible substance like time itself, as an exemplary bridge to th…

  • The Intimacies of Bondage

    Nancy Van Deusen•ARTICLE•Journal of women's history•2012•Cited by: 11•References: 17

In early colonial Latin America many of the women who had been distributed as war booty, taken in village raids, or illegally branded as slaves became the partners of Spanish men. This article privileges these severely compromised historical subjects to consider how relations of violence and intimacy formed an integral part of their lives. An analysis of notarial and parish records reveals that deracinated women in bondage maintained intimate fam…

  • Chastity

    Nancy Van Deusen•BOOK•Chastity•2008

Chastity as a topic is an ideal interdisciplinary consideration since it accesses iconographical representation, the philosophical issues of purity, morality, and of innocence; the legal issues of loss and punishment, the historical issues of celibacy, and the legislation that topic evoked; as well as the role of chastity as a literary topos in Late Antiquity as well as the Middle Ages, for example, in medieval commentary traditions and within me…

Christian Meyer, Nancy Van Deusen•ARTICLE•Revue de musicologie•1996

  • Chapter Three

Nancy Van Deusen•CHAPTER•Theology and Music at the Early…•1995

This book unites the most important theological-philosophical subjects discussed by 13th-century Robert Grosseteste with those exemplified by an anonymous contemporary English writer on music, “Anonymous IV”. The work demonstrates how music collaborated with the other liberal arts, operating within the early university curriculum as a ministry discipline, and making accessible new Aristotelian concepts.

  • Theology and Music at the Early University

Nancy Van Deusen•BOOK•Theology and Music at the Early…•1994

At the climax of one of his most important and comprehensive works, De cessatione legalium, the thirteenth-century theologian and natural philosopher, Robert Grosseteste, uses a musical example to make a point fundamental to the treatise. Music, using time as its material, located between the abstract and the concrete, served as an analogy, thus making a difficult philosophical concept perceptible. In using music as an analogy, Gorsseteste drew u…

  • Aspects of a mediaeval cultural context ‘milieu’ and manuscript transmission at Nevers Cathedral

    Nancy Van Deusen•ARTICLE•Musicology Australia•1982

Key differences between monastic and cathedral institutions during the important transitional period of the late eleventh to early twelfth centuries account for selective, eclectic assimilation of pieces, feasts, performance mannerisms and musical structural emphasis in manuscripts from a cathedral community in central France. Affinity of institutional type connects Nevers with the cathedral cities which circle Paris, Norman-influenced Sicily, an…
