How do learning technologies impact on undergraduates’ emotional and cognitive engagement with their learning
A common theme in the literature on learning technologies is the way in which they can facilitate engagement both within and outside of the classroom. However, a lack of a scholarly consensus on what constitutes engagement renders problematic the issue of how one makes meaningful sense of the data presented in studies. This paper presents an integrative review that explores student engagement with learning technologies and identifies major themes…
Thomas Adès in Five Essays. Drew Massey
The proliferation of PhD dissertations, journal articles, book chapters, and book-length studies on the music of Thomas Adès that has appeared in recent years demonstrates the continued, and buoyant, academic interest in the composer. Drew Massey’s stimulating Thomas Adès in Five Essays, published shortly before Adès’s fiftieth birthday year, opens by acknowledging its debt to this work. Massey describes his book as ‘an epistle to my colleagues w…

Music, metaphor and modernism: Barrie Gavin’s composer portraits
The Royal Philharmonic Society has described the series of composer portraits created by Barrie Gavin as ‘an unprecedented legacy and treasure trove for musicians and curious listeners alike to discover’. These profiles are characterized by their commitment to music of living composers, but also to a repertoire that has become increasingly marginalized in arts coverage in the half century or so since Gavin’s first portrait. This article examines …
Thomas Adès and the Spectres of Brahms
The appearance of a ghost in Alfred Brendel's poem 'Brahms II', set by Thomas Adès for baritone and orchestra in 2001, is not the first time Brahms the composer has been discussed with reference to the supernatural. In order to provide a hermeneutic interpretation of Adès's Brahms, op. 21, and an explanation of why Brahms continues to haunt composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this article draws on Derrida's notion of hauntology…
Thomas Adès's 'Freaky, Funky Rave
Ecstasio', the third movement ofThomasAdès's 1997 orchestral workAsyla, draws heavily on gestures and forms of electronic dance music (EDM) in a manner analogous to the use of contemporary dance genres in theRomantic scherzo. The relative novelty ofEDMin the symphonic repertoire led early critics of the work to focus their attention on the unusual gestures and forms that are alluded to in 'Ecstasio'. The resulting emphasis on the social, politica…
Composing in Words: William Alwyn on his Art. Ed. by Andrew Palmer
Early in his introduction, Andrew Palmer notes that ‘of the British “1905 composers” who recently shared a centenary year, William Alwyn alone has seen, if not a revival, at least a marked growth of interest in his music’ (p. 7). Composing in Words is the latest contribution to this ‘marked growth’; other manifestations include two Boydell Press monographs (Adrian Wright’s The Innumerable Dance (2008) and Ian Johnson’s William Alwyn: The Art of F…

Landscapes of the Mind: The Music of John McCabe. Compiled and ed. by George Odam. * The Innumerable Dance: The Life and Work of William Alwyn. By Adrian Wright
Both The Innumerable Dance and Landscapes of the Mind are firsts in the reception of their respective subjects. In the former, the biographer Adrian Wright turns his attention from literary subjects such as L. P. Hartley and John Lehmann to a composer, albeit one with literary (as well as artistic) ambitions: William Alwyn. The result is the first full-scale biography of Alwyn, aided and hampered in equal measure by Alwyn’s second wife, Mary (née…
Nicholas Maw: Odyssey. By Kenneth Gloag
Nicholas Maw's orchestral Odyssey, like Walton's First Symphony, was premiered incomplete: though first heard in 1987, a full performance had to wait until 1989. The length of the work—a single movement lasting some ninety minutes—was the cause of its staggered introduction into the public realm, due to inadequate rehearsal time for the premiere. A performance recorded by Simon Rattle and the CBSO in 1990 and released on CD in the following year …
