  • Associations Between Home Literacy Environment, Reading Interest, Independent Reading and Reading Skills Among Primary School Children: A Two‐Site Study in China

Open Access•Mengmeng Su, Su‐Zhen Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Reading•2026

Background This study examined the relationship between home literacy environment (HLE), reading interest, independent reading and reading skills in primary school children and whether their relationship is similar across different socioeconomic contexts. Methods Data were collected from two socioeconomically distinct sites in China: Beijing (representing high per capita income [PCI], N = 227; 52% female) and Tianshui (representing low PCI, N = 2…

  • The relation between family factors and children’s vocabulary knowledge: A comparative study of rural and urban preschoolers in China

Open Access•Xinyi Leng, Xianglin Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2026

Although family factors are considered important for children’s language acquisition, the evidence comes primarily from affluent societies. Thus, this study aimed to examine the relations between family factors (family’s socioeconomic status [SES], home literacy activities, access to print resources, and parental beliefs) and children’s vocabulary knowledge in both urban and rural settings in China. Data from 366 children (urban group: 109, 4.85 …

  • Visualizing road connectivity under traffic influence: A CiteSpace-based method

    L Jiang, Jingyu Jiang et al.•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2024•References: 4

The connectivity of roads under the influence of traffic is determined by the topological connections established by the road network and the transport connections formed by moving vehicles between two roads simultaneously. A thorough examination of this connectivity is crucial for comprehending traffic patterns and providing guidance to address transportation issues such as traffic congestion. However, existing methods ignore the intuitive repre…

  • Finding and Evaluating Community Structures in Spatial Networks

Open Access•You Wan, Xicheng Tan et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2023

Community detection can reveal unknown spatial structures embedded in spatial networks. Current spatial community detection methods are mostly modularity-based. However, due to the lack of appropriate spatial networks serving as a benchmark, the accuracy and effectiveness of these methods have not been tested sufficiently so far. This study first introduced a spatial autoregressive and gravity model united method (SARGM) to simulate benchmark spa…

Open Access•Wang Xi, Xi Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2023

Quantifying the centrality of places and identifying centers constitute the basis for assessing the urban spatial structure, which is essential for sustainable spatial planning. Both the existence and intensity of linkages contribute to the centrality of places. However, few centrality measures consider both aspects simultaneously. Additionally, the identification of centers often relies on specified minimum thresholds, which is subjective and ar…

Chinese developmental dyslexia (DD) research provides important insights into the language-universal and language-specific mechanisms underlying dyslexia. In this article, we review recent advances in Chinese DD. Converging behavioral evidence suggests that, while phonological and rapid automatized naming deficits are language universal, orthographic and morphological deficits are specific to the linguistic properties of Chinese. At the neural le…

  • What Influences Customer Flows in Shopping Malls: Perspective from Indoor Positioning Data

Open Access•Tao Pei, Yaxi Liu et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2020

Offline stores are seriously challenged by online shops. To attract more customers to compete with online shops, the patterns of customer flows and their influence factors are important knowledge. To address this issue, we collected indoor positioning data of 534,641 and 59,160 customers in two shopping malls (i.e., Dayuecheng (DYC) in Beijing and Longhu (LH) in Chongqing, China) for one week, respectively. The temporal patterns of the customer f…

Open Access•Yaxi Liu, Dayu Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2020

Customer profiles that include gender and age information are important to businesses and can be used to promote sales and provide personalized services. This information is gathered in e-commerce by analyzing customer visit records in virtual web space. However, such practice is difficult in brick-and-mortar businesses because the data that can be utilized to infer customer profiles are limited in physical spaces. In this paper, we attempt to in…

The acquisition of language involves the functional specialization of several cortical regions. Connectivity between these brain regions may also change with the development of language. Various studies have demonstrated that the arcuate fasciculus was essential for language function. Vocabulary learning is one of the most important skills in language acquisition. In the present longitudinal study, we explored the influence of vocabulary developm…

  • Morphological awareness uniquely predicts young children's Chinese character recognition.

Two unique measures of morphological awareness, along with other reading-related tasks, were orally administered to 100 kindergarten and 100 2nd-grade Hong Kong Chinese children. These morphological awareness tasks were developed on the basis of 2 special properties of Chinese: (a) the relatively large number of homophones requires speakers to distinguish unique meanings in syllables with identical sounds, and (b) complex vocabulary words are oft…

Two studies explored the nature of phonological awareness (PA) in Chinese. Similarly, tone awareness was at better than chance levels from second year kindergarten (age 4), but increased strongly and signif…

With age and vocabulary knowledge statistically controlled, both morphological awareness and orthographic knowledge were uniquely associated with all t…

  • Categorical Perception of VOT and Lexical Tones in Chinese and the Developmental Course: Categorical Perception of VOT and Lexical Tones in Chinese and the Developmental Course

Jie XI, Wei Jiang et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2009

Among 262 Chinese children, syllable awareness and rapid automatized naming (RAN) at age 5 years and invented spelling of Pinyin at age 6 years independently predicted subsequent Chinese character recognition and English word reading at ages 8 years and 10 years, even with initial Chinese character reading ability statistically controlled. In addition, reading fluency in Chinese was predicted by RAN but not by phonological sensitivity, whereas Ch…

  • The processing of lexical tones by young Chinese children

Open Access•CANDISE Y LIN, Min Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2013

The current study examined five- and seven-year-old Mandarin-speaking children's processing of lexical tones in relation to speech segments by varying onset and rime in an oddity task (onset±rime±). Results showed that children experienced more difficulty in lexical tone oddity judgment when rimes differed across monosyllables (e.g. onset+rime−) than when onsets differed (e.g. onset−rime+). This finding suggests that vowels interfere more than co…
